See you at Collaborate 2011

I’ll be speaking at IOUG’s Collaborate conference in Florida the week of April 10-14. My session is called MySQL Performance Basics. For those who know MySQL, this won’t be exciting, but if you’re new to it, I hope it will be a good orientation to what you should focus on and ignore.

Sheeri Cabral posted a good round-up of the MySQL talks at Collaborate on the PalominoDB blog.

MySQL Beginner’s Guide to Collaborate

So, you are going to Collaborate (or thinking of going) and you wonder if, as a MySQL beginner, there will be enough content for you. Or you wonder if there will be too much, and how you will ever decide on what to go to. I have put together this list of what I would recommend to a MySQL Beginner at Collaborate.  The schedule is still being tweaked at this point, so there may be great sessions being added or times may be changed, but I will try to re-post closer to the event.  The most up-to-date schedule is at the Agenda Builder – to see only MySQL content, choose MySQL in the “Product Lines” section.

Note that a few weeks ago Sarah Novotny and I did an OurSQL podcast about Collaborate, including information on how to get $200 off the registration price. The information there is very different from what is in this blog post, so I would recommend …

SSDs and their impact on database servers

Vadim Tkachenko published interesting benchmark results with PCI-E based SSDs here. I recently got a chance to benchmark FusionIO’s 320 GB PCI-E drive. It was really impressive. My results, done on Windows with sqlio, are consistent (not identical, of course, but in the same ballpark) with what Vadim reported in that blog post, done with sysbench on Linux.

sqlio is a popular IO throughput testing tool from Microsoft. I didn’t get to test the throughput when the SSD is close to full. The key takeaways that I learned from my testing are:

1. I can confirm that there is no difference between random and sequential IO, contrary to the traditional spindle based hard disks;

2. Read is significantly faster than write. Reads and writes with 64 threads can achieve around 1.4 GB/S and 400 MB/S …

Log Buffer #214, A Carnival of the Vanities for DBAs

Database Servers are humming along, and the people who manage them, interact with them or are just in awe of them are busy in blogging about them. This inspires our next Log Buffer, Log Buffer #214.

Oracle:

Chet Justice, the Oracle Nerd breathes a sigh of relief as he gets to release some much needed space from his hard drive.

Jonathan Lewis reminds about a subtle difference between a predicate and the constraint.

Oracle announced the release of VirtualBox 4.0.4 today. This maintenance release addresses many bugs experienced by hosts of all operating systems. You can find a full list of fixes and additions in the Changelog.

I use VirtualBox on both my Macs for my various testing needs. If you’ve got a favorite desktop virtualization program, leave a comment and tell us about it.

OurSQL: The MySQL Database Community Podcast

For those of you not aware of it, Sheeri K. Cabral and Sarah Novotny are doing a great job running the "OurSQL" Podcast. A great and convenient way to learn more about various MySQL topics.

Episode 33 is about "Looking through the Lenz"...that is, Lenz Grimmer, MySQL Community Manager at Oracle and long time MySQLer.

Lenz talks about snapshot backups in general, MySQL backups with snapshots, and mylvmbackup, a script he wrote and maintains to easily take consistent MySQL snapshot backups. Check it out!

Keep up the good work, Sheeri and Sarah!

Product Support vs Operational Support

Sometimes I get questions as to whether Pythian is one of the competitors battling with Oracle for MySQL support. The answer lies in the distinction of product support and operational support.

At Pythian, we are laser focused on supporting applications and data infrastructure using Oracle, MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server products. A vast majority of our Oracle customers (there are few customers who have very old 7.x and 8.x products running without vendor support) have Oracle maintenance subscriptions that include product updates and product support. Product support entitles the customer to open support requests when the product doesn’t perform according to the specifications (bug reports) as well as fill in enhancement requests. It also covers deployment blue-prints and deployment guidelines in the official …
