As usual, the MySQL Users Conference and Expo includes Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions. For the uninitiated, a BoF is an informal discussion group about a common topic. There is no registration and no fee for a BoF. You can organize one even if you don't plan to attend the main event. If your BoF is accepted and scheduled, you can organize it as you like. You won't get a free pass for a BoF, though. We provide the rooms. You bring in the ideas. Submit a BoF proposal! … |

Today I gave my first MySQL University session as a speaker, talking about Backing up MySQL using file system snapshots. The talk went quite well (at least that was my impression) and we had ~10 people attending. The slides (PDF) and a recording of the session are now available from the Wiki page. Unfortunately the recording lacks the audio track, which is a bit of a bummer. We've submitted a support request with the DimDim folks, so hopefully they can provide us with a complete recording.
There was one question during the session that I was not able to answer myself, so I'm asking for your …
[Read more]Shortly after I blogged about my upcoming talks and events, I got informed that one of my session proposals for the next09 conference was accepted. This event will take place in Hamburg, Germany on Tuesday and Wednesday (5th and 6th of May), so at least there isn't much travel involved.
My talk about "Working for a Virtual Company: How we do it at MySQL" has been scheduled for 9:00 am on Wednesday morning, parallel to a keynote by Brian Solis from FutureWorks. I'm not sure how many people will actually show up, but I look forward to giving a talk about a less …

It's really a hard job to decide into which companies to invest.
We at Open Ocean, my investment company, have talked
with around 60 companies the last few months to find those that
we think have a great potential and that would benefit from our
involvement.
One company that more than well matched our investment criterias
was Ironstar, that makes the MoiPal virtual world.
With more than 100,000 registered users they are definitely a
company to watch out for.
I have always been interested in virtual worlds and see how the
communities around them continue to grow. The thing that really
stands out to me with MoiPal, is the way it combines the social
networking aspects similar to Facebook, with the caring of your
online character, like you do with …
My calendar for the upcoming months is already filling up with conferences, trade fairs and other events at which I'll speak about MySQL. Here's a quick overview:
- This coming Thursday at 15:00 CET, I'll be speaking about "Backing up MySQL using file system snapshots" at the MySQL University. The session will be hosted live using DimDim, which is a great online conferencing and presentation system (Flash required). Attendance is free, so come and join me if you want to learn more about this backup technique!
- On Friday, 6th of March at 15:15 I'll give a presentation about "MySQL Backup and Security" in the …
I have been talking more and more with colleagues about the Open Source community and licenses. Zak Greant recently wrote in Free Culture vs. Fear Culture vs. Fee Culture that, “People with bad intentions will do bad things . . . often regardless of the license on the work.”
And, unfortunately, he is right. If I release an article or presentation video with a Creative Commons license, it is still possible for my work to be plagiarized, and if it is, I will still feel violated.
Many of us who use Creative Commons or MySQL have an Open Source mentality. We often do not see value in pirating software—why would we use Microsoft Word (a legally licensed copy, or pirated) if we can use …
