Graphs are important, as they are your window onto your monitored systems. ClusterControl comes with a predefined set of graphs for you to analyze, these are built on top of the metric sampling done by the controller. Those are designed to give you, at first glance, as much information as possible about the state of your database cluster. You might have your own set of metrics you’d like to monitor though. Therefore ClusterControl allows you to customize the graphs available in the cluster overview section and in the Nodes -> DB Performance tab. Multiple metrics can be overlaid on the same graph.

If you are a MySQL DBA for a long time (like me), it’s very complicated to get rid of bad habits. One of them I really need to change is the way to retrieve the list of all the running queries (processlist).

Usually, I use SHOW FULL PROCESSLIST which is very convenient, but like querying the Information_Schema, this statement has negative performance consequences because it requires a mutex. Therefore, you should use Performance_Schema which doesn’t require a mutex and has minimal impact on server performance.

Recently our team was tasked to implement MySQL 8.0 in production for a client. While MySQL 8.0 is looking very promising and has a lot of cool new features and revamped old features, it’s still pretty young. The MySQL development team is working very hard on stabilizing the product but, reading the latest release notes for version 8.0.12, it is still very much a bugfix release and not something you will want to put in production immediately. Also, given the fact that a lot of tools such as Percona Xtrabackup do not support MySQL 8.0 yet, we were a bit reluctant to proceed with this idea. But … the client had a strong use case to make use of roles and resource groups and we like challenges so we decided to give it a go.
