MySQL Cluster basics: Why using a primary key is even more important

While we were mostly excited to become part of Sun, there was at least one drawback too. MySQL had a worldwide policy of "Scandinavian style" 5 week vacations per year (4 Summer, 1 Winter week). Sun doesn't have such a worldwide policy, so most of us lost some vacation days there. But there is one group of employees that still enjoy this benefit... those of us that actually live in Scandinavia!

Those 4 weeks are however now gone for my part :-( So I thought I'll make a soft start to working by a) yesterday doing almost nothing and b) today blogging. A long long time ago before I left for my vacation Mark Callaghan requested more blog posts about MySQL Cluster, so I thought why not start with one right now. As previously noted there are many good MySQL Cluster bloggers out there, but admittedly some of their blog postings can be very …

MySQL Replication Tips And Tricks

Until recently, I was a student employee at the Oregon State University Open Source Lab. My career there ended, like many, with that painful process known as graduation. I got invaluable experience at the lab, not the least of which being the knowledge gained as their main (only) database administrator. One of my great pleasures in that position, was learning how to configure MySQL replication and manage clusters of replicating database servers. Even the simple case of a single master and a single slave has its edge cases.

March 2008 Boston MySQL User Group ? Slides and Video Are Up!

Well, nobody from Sun showed up in person, but we got a great rendition of “Where were you when you heard THE NEWS that Sun bought MySQL?” from Mark Rubin, the MySQL Sales Engineer for the New England area, and from Giuseppe Maxia, who revealed something very interesting and riveting.

From there, Giuseppe gave a short talk on what it’s like to work at MySQL, and then we moved on to the topic of the user group meeting, “What is MySQL Cluster Good For?”

The slides for the talk are downloadable in PDF Format 61kB and Flash (SWF) format, 31kB

The video can be played at http://technocation.org/node/572/play and …

Cluster Study Guide, Edition 2

My new edition of the MySQL 5.1 Cluster DBA Certification Study Guide arrived today. It features a bigger format, corrections, and much better graphics. And it is $10 less expensive.

The MySQL Cluster is just different enough from the 'old fashioned' server to be confusing to long time MySQL DBAs. This book points out common problems people have getting their clusters configured. So if you are curious about how clusters work and want more than the man pages as a reference, order you copy today!

Some new MySQL nuggets from blogs.sun.com and elsewhere

Thankfully my RSS reader has builtin-search capability, so I can quickly skim the full RSS feed from blogs.sun.com for keywords of interest. I found the following articles quite helpful:

  • Setting up MySQL Cluster using Solaris Zones by Hashamkha Pathan walks through the steps involved of setting up a virtual MySQL Cluster setup on a single Solaris instance (for evaluation purposes only - this is probably not the best idea for a productive HA environment)
  • Mixing SQL and shell commands in MySQL by Amit Saha explains how to write scripts that execute both SQL statements and unix shell commands using the MySQL command line client

Two second editions, two first times

The buzz of the week is all about books. The second edition of High Performance MySQL has just hit the shelves. In addition to being a complete rewrite of the first edition, this is a sort of community book, where the authors gathered together the official tools and the ones available in the community to explain how to make MySQL fly. Many topics were submitted
