OSCon 2008 Video: Does Open Source Need to Be Organic?

A panel consisting of Brian Aker of MySQL, Rob Lanphier of Linden Lab, Stephen O'Grady of Redmonk, and Theodore Ts'o of the Linux Foundation gives some answers to the question, "Does Open Source Need to Be Organic?" This topic stemmed from a few posts by Ts'o a few months before OSCon.

From the official conference description:

there?s much more to a software project than just the license. Are software projects dominated by a single company still open source? Does a project need to be 'organic' to be truly open source? What does "organic" even mean in this context? Join us as we discuss these topics and more.

Notes from Structure 08, Velocity and Graphing Social Patterns East

I attended several events in June of this year including Graphing Social Patterns East, Velocity and Structure 08. At each of these events, I tried to take some notes and posted them to my personal blog. I received a few pings from readers of this blog to point them to a list of these posts. It took some time but here is the list of my notes. In some cases, I have linked directly to the presentation files.

High-performance Ajax Applications: Julien Lecomte (Yahoo!) talked about how to …

Alex Gorbachev at Oracle Open World 2008: Under the Hood of Oracle Clusterware

If a MySQL DBA from Pythian goes to Oracle Open World, it would be a shame not to send an Oracle bloke, so there I am — presenting a 90-minute session on the first day of the OOW 08 entitled Under the Hood of Oracle Clusterware.

I gave it during RAC Attack in Chicago and I’m pretty satisfied with how it went, so there should be no significant changes to the presentation. The session is in “User Group Forum,” thanks to RAC SIG and Dan Norris.

When the session was first …

Josh Berkus' "Safe Data is Happy Data" (originally entitled "Lock Up Your Data") goes talks about defense in depth -- going beyond firewalls and other "perimeter defense" mechanisms such as middleware and web server tools. Sheeri Cabral Speaks at Oracle Open World

An event truly fitting an “open world” — I will be speaking at Oracle Open World.

How does a wild-mannered MySQL DBA like me get to speak at an Oracle conference? Well, after I received the MySQL Community Award two years in a row, Dan Norris contacted me, and encouraged me to submit a proposal with him on how to contribute to the community.

Oracle has a formal program for recognizing community members at two levels: the Oracle ACE Director, and the Oracle ACE. An Oracle ACE Director is expected to make a 12-month commitment to working with the community, while an Oracle ACE is bestowed upon folks to recognize their volunteer efforts in the past. More information about the program can be found on …
