We’re proud to announce the availability of the 2nd alpha-version of MSQL Workbench 5.2. As you may already know, this is the youngest member of the workbench-family and also the version that adds another role - the one of the database-querying-tool - to the application. There have been major enhancements - not only to the querying part - since we released the first alpha version. Please keep in mind that this is still an alpha version and it’s not recommended for use in a production environment. While most parts of the final application are already in place there are still a few things left to implement or details subject to change. Please download the program, take it for a test-drive and tell us what you think.

The MySQL Workbench team would like to announce the availability of the first Alpha release of MySQL Workbench 5.2.

The major new feature in MySQL Workbench 5.2 is the SQL IDE, which offers the ability to edit and execute queries on MySQL servers. The new SQL query editor, based on the Open Source Scintilla text editor component, offers full syntax highlighting and other advanced editing features. The SQL editor was also extended to perform live syntax checking, detecting and indicating any syntax errors in your SQL code even before executing them. The IDE also provides ability to browse and edit the contents of individual table rows.

Note, however, that as this is a development version, there are known and unknown issues that might prevent the smooth use of the application. Backup your models often and before opening them with this version as the file format has …

After a turbulent week, where a few of our team were presenting workbench at this years MySQL Users Conference, we have finally uploaded the next beta packages for you to try. We’ve further improved the handling of the application. The problem with the missing table editor in the mac package is fixed in this release as well.

I caught up with Zach Skyles Owens, a PHP Evangelist at Microsoft. If you missed the embed, watch the video. I have some sparse notes below.

I learned some new things:

• Microsoft spends time working with the PHP community
• They are porting applications to work with an SQL Server backend
• They are ensuring that the language should “just work”, with the IIS and SQL Server stack. This is quite different from the usual AMP (Apache = server, MySQL = database, PHP = language) stack that we’re quite accustomed to.

We have finally uploaded the next beta packages of our upcoming database design tool. We have fixed several bugs and added some enhancements that to the Interface. There’s a new editor for defining/maintaining User Defined Datatypes.

There are binary-packages for Windows, Mac OS X Leopard and Linux (Ubuntu and Fedora) as well as the zipped sources for building Workbench yourself. We are proud to announce the release of the first official Beta of MySQL Workbench 5.1, the next highly anticipated version of our database GUI tool - MySQL Workbench. For the first time we are making an announcement for all our major platforms at the same time: OSX, Linux and Windows.

MySQL Workbench 5.1 has some major improvement over our current 5.0 release, many of them might not be that visible when looking at the UI only. We did a major overhaul under the hood in addition to enhance usability and adding some features. On top of it, we moved some features to 5.1 OSS, that were only available in SE edition for 5.0 (like different notation styles i.e.). The editors have been tuned to startup more quickly, and some of them also got face lifted. All Wizards have been revamped using our new mForms library.
