Shinguz: German speaking MySQL User Group (DMySQLAG) founded today

Today the German speaking MySQL User Group (DMySQLAG) was officially founded in Berlin.

The association advocates:

  • the information of the use, the handling and the experience with MySQL and development in the MySQL Eco-System as well as systems which use MySQL.
  • the exchange of experience between MySQL users about MySQL and other systems.
  • the Advice and Cooperation with Oracle and vendors of other systems.
  • the submission of suggestions of the members to Oracle and vendors of other systems.

The intention of the German speaking MySQL User Group is to be a platform for MySQL User from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. To get a high enough weight for Austria and Switzerland we hope for a high number of registrations of these two countries.

Yesterday I wrote about the dangers in using top on systems with 100+ GB of RAM, not to mention future systems with 1+ TB. A related topic is, how should I configure MySQL on such a large system?

There is a classic rule of thumb that on a dedicated MySQL server one should allocate 80% of memory to the InnoDB buffer pool. On a 128GB system that is 102.4 GB. This means that I would leave 25.6 GB of RAM "unused". So surely on these large systems, this old piece of advice cannot hold anymore. If the database was previously running on a server that in total had less than that altogether, it seems wrong to leave so much memory just unused. How To Set Up MySQL Database Replication With SSL Encryption On Debian Squeeze

This tutorial describes how to set up database replication in MySQL using an SSL connection for encryption (to make it impossible for hackers to sniff out passwords and data transferred between the master and slave). MySQL replication allows you to have an exact copy of a database from a master server on another server (slave), and all updates to the database on the master server are immediately replicated to the database on the slave server so that both databases are in sync. This is not a backup policy because an accidentally issued DELETE command will also be carried out on the slave; but replication can help protect against hardware failures though.

It helps because performance searches, insert, index handling and data management as well.
All fine we are all happy, and very often we push on our customer to go for partition in order to solve part of their problems.
What happens quite often is that customer (and sometime MySQL dba as well) see partitions as separate tables.
Unfortunately is not like that, there are some operations that are (still?) creating unexpected results.
One of this is the OPTIMIZATION of a partition.


The case

Some time ago, almost 16 months I was at customer site and we were working with MySQL 5.5 rc.
We were really happy with the new version of MySQL, and being working for MySQL/SUN I was quite proud of it as well.

Percona Live NYC 2011

A couple weeks back, I had the fortune of co-speaking at Percona Live NYC 2011 with Mark Uhrmacher, CTO of ideeli on the subject of running an E-commerce site with MySQL in the cloud. Interestingly, and a sign of the times, this was also the first time that I had ever met Mark, despite having worked for him for close to a year since I telecommute from home.
