The MySQL UC this past week was the best in years.   Percona did an outstanding job of organizing the main Percona Live event that ran Tuesday through Thursday.  About 1000 people attended, which is up from the 800 or so at the O'Reilly-run conference in 2011.  There were also excellent follow-on events on Friday for MariaDB/SkySQL, Drizzle, and Sphinx.

What made this conference different was the renewed energy around MySQL and the number of companies using it.

It is the day after the conference ended and I feel great. Two days of percona live and a day of skysql, drizzle and sphynx presentations were just awesome. I can say that IMHO it is one of the best MySQL conferences since I started attending four years ago. Well done Percona.

I should also thank SkySQL and MariaDB for the free days of sessions I attended yesterday, organized and delivered by these two community focussed companies.

This week, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Percona Live MySQL Conference & Expo. If you are following news regarding openSUSE and MySQL, you probably already know, that we have both MySQL and MariaDB in openSUSE to allow users to choose what they want to use. And if these two options are not enough, we’ve got server:database repository with newest and greatest development versions of both and MySQL Cluster on to of that.  Oracle VM Administration: Oracle VM Server for x86 - new course just released.

This 3 day hands-on course teaches students how to build a virtualization platform using the Oracle VM Manager and Oracle VM Server for x86. As with any open source software, anyone can download MySQL sources, build binaries for some platforms and distribute their own packages. So we have the official ones from Oracle, MariaDB, and Percona – the makers of MySQL and its forks respectively. There are also those distributed with operating systems or that are available for install from their standard repositories. Some people or groups also create packages out of the most recent versions of various software and make them available to the world. Finally, some mash up a vanilla MySQL with various patches creating even more options. What to choose?

Database is a piece of software that needs to be reliable in every way. It often holds the only complete and up-to-date copy of data. It may keep confidential information.
