Help me polish MySQL in openSUSE 12.2

If you are following news regarding openSUSE and MySQL, you probably already know, that we have both MySQL and MariaDB in openSUSE to allow users to choose what they want to use. And if these two options are not enough, we’ve got server:database repository with newest and greatest development versions of both and MySQL Cluster on to of that. I think all this is great and awesome, that we have all of that.

Now to the not so great part. Unfortunately I’m bare human, I have to eat, sleep and I have some work, some bugs that takes a lot more time that I expected, some school duties to take care of and of course openSUSE Conference to organize! So as a result of all that, I can’t polish MySQL and MariaDB as much I would love to. And on top of that, I’m not …

Choosing a MySQL package

As with any open source software, anyone can download MySQL sources, build binaries for some platforms and distribute their own packages. So we have the official ones from Oracle, MariaDB, and Percona – the makers of MySQL and its forks respectively. There are also those distributed with operating systems or that are available for install from their standard repositories. Some people or groups also create packages out of the most recent versions of various software and make them available to the world. Finally, some mash up a vanilla MySQL with various patches creating even more options. What to choose?

Database is a piece of software that needs to be reliable in every way. It often holds the only complete and up-to-date copy of data. It may keep confidential information. It may be supporting an application where every minute of downtime costs a little fortune. Or perhaps it just needs to be as efficient as it can possibly be. There could …

This Monday: Silicon Valley NewSQL Meetup

This week, I was at Percona Live, and it was a lot of fun! I even got to give a talk on write optimization techniques (not just ours), that I’m told will be online soon.

But if you missed that, or even if you didn’t, I’m still in the valley until Monday night. I’ll be speaking very briefly, and fielding questions this Monday, April 16th, at 6PM, at the Silicon Valley NewSQL group’s meetup in Sunnyvale. It’s shaping up to be a great crowd—Amazon, Microsoft, Clustrix, VoltDB, Drizzle, and many others will be there. So if you’re at all curious, come on by, I’d love to talk to you. Hope to see you there!

MySQL Performance: 5.5 and 5.6-labs @TPCC-like

It's now over a year when there was a quite interesting exchange with Vadim and other Percona guys due their TPCC-like benchmark results on MySQL 5.5 - I've replayed on that time the same tests, but with a better tuned configuration parameters to demonstrate that with a little bit more love, MySQL 5.5 may keep TPCC-like workload very well ;-)) However, it was clear that Adaptive Flushing in 5.5 needs some improvement (which is now implemented in 5.6), but there were also several open questions regarding I/O level and …
