The first big change for this 2019 edition is that the MariaDB Foundation (Ian) is joining my efforts to build this Devroom. Don’t forget that FOSDEM takes place in Belgium, and our motto is “l’Union fait la Force” [“Unity is Strength”].

The Importance of mysqlbinlog –version

When deciding on your backup strategy, one of the key components for Point In Time Recovery (PITR) will be the binary logs. Thankfully, the mysqlbinlog command allows you to easily take binary log backups, including those that would otherwise be encrypted on disk using encrypt_binlog=ON.

When

mysqlbinlog

  is used with

--raw --read-from-remote-server --stop-never --verify-binlog-checksum

then it will retrieve binary logs from whichever master it is pointed to, and store …

This Week in Data with Colin Charles #54: Percona Server for MySQL is Alpha

Join Percona Chief Evangelist Colin Charles as he covers happenings, gives pointers and provides musings on the open source database community.

I consider this to be the biggest news for the week: Alpha Build of Percona Server for MySQL 8.0. Experiment with it in a Docker container. It is missing column compression with dictionary support, native partitioning for TokuDB and MyRocks (excited to see that this is coming!), and encryption key rotation and scrubbing. All in, this should be a fun release to try, test, and also to file bugs for!

Database paradigms are changing, and it is interesting to see Cloudflare introducing Workers KV a key-value store, that is eventually consistent and highly distributed (at their global …

Join Percona Chief Evangelist Colin Charles as he covers happenings, gives pointers and provides musings on the open source database community.

This week is clearly what I’d call a “MariaDB week” — plenty of announcements coming from MariaDB Corporation and MariaDB Foundation.

It started with Alibaba Cloud and MariaDB Announce the Launch of ApsaraDB RDS for MariaDB TX, which makes Alibaba Cloud the first public cloud to offer the enterprise offering of MariaDB, MariaDB TX 3.0. It is not available yet as of this announcement for rolling out from the interface, but I expect it will be soon. Exciting, as you can already get MariaDB Server on …

Join Percona Chief Evangelist Colin Charles as he covers happenings, gives pointers and provides musings on the open source database community.

This week wraps up the London MySQL meetup, where there were four presentations, for the intimate yet diverse crowd. We saw representation from Oracle MySQL, MariaDB Corporation, Pythian, and Percona. Long-time organizer Ivan Zoratti has also handed off the baton to Maria Luisa Raviol, and going forward she will ensure meetups are at least once per quarter. It was a real pleasure to see MySQL Community Manager Dave Stokes at the event, too.

A new book to read: AWS System Administration: Best Practices for Sysadmins in the Amazon Cloud. There is coverage of RDS, from the standpoint of an example application stack as …
