PHP, Laziness and the consequences of bad habits

A few days ago, I tried to use an opensource mailing list manager program, it had great reviews and seemed to have the features I wanted. So, I tried it out, to my dismay just the installer alone had issues, when I went to the install page (thank you for making one in the first place), I was presented with lots and lots of PHP on screen..obviously, I was confused, this is PHPcult.com after all, and the server is configured to parse .php, .php3, .inc. So, I had to do some digging as to what was causing the problem.. the programmers used short open tags for PHP. So, I thought, I need to make a list of things that people do, that may come and bite them later on down the road. Here goes:

  • Register Globals : This has been discussed more than it should be, it's a simple concept, just take it from the more experienced programmers, this is bad.

  • Short Open …

Audio for Copyright, Contracts and Licensing for PHP Developers session

The organizers of the PHP Québec Conference were gracious enough to give me an unedited copy of my Copyright, Contracts and Licensing for PHP Developers session.

I cleaned the audio up last night, stripping out some of the more odious filler words (I seem to say “Umm” rather often), shortening pauses as I switched slides, removing redundant asides (like asking if there are any questions, when no questions then follow) and excising the introduction and applause.

After a good deal of consideration, I did chose to leave the errors and other flaws in the content presented. These flaws were presented to the audience and they should stay in the recording.

Of course, I don’t want people to be mislead by any of the flaws; to prevent this, I am transcribing the entire talk, …

A new blog ... and my employer is hiring...

It's been a while since I've written. Sorry to all 1 of my fans :). I am just very busy with work. So, two things.

First is a blog my friend Joel started: http://www.browserlessweb.com/ . I suggest reading it, it's not PHP or MySQL centric, but the things he talks about should affect anyone who reads this blog.

Second item: My Employer is looking to hire some people

  • You must have good working experience with PHP in an enterprise environment (very high visibility site).
  • We will not hold your hand in a linux environment. You must be comfortable with vim, emacs nano, joe, jed, pico whatever.
  • Some experience with teams larger …

SCAMP

Apparently SCO is trying to push it's OS with a new Product - SCAMP, a LAMP-like combination of OpenServer, Apache, MySQL and PHP/Perl. Unfortunately for them the abbreviation is already an english word.
Leo says in german it's "Schuft, Spitzbube" as a noun and "pfuschen" as a verb. Should this tell us anything about the product? This reminds me of the short-lived slogan of the Deutsche Bahn "Geniessen Sie Ihr Leben in vollen Zügen" (Enjoy Your life to the fullest / Enjoy Your life in overcrowded trains). But who's to blame, our latest product is named Chorizo :-)

phpMyAdmin will showcase at the MySQL User Conference!

I am excited to announce that the phpMyAdmin project confirmed to be present at the DotOrg Pavilion of our MySQL Users Conference in Santa Clara next month. Thanks a lot to Marc Delisle for the quick reply and arrangement of a representative. One more good addition to the excellent program we've already lined up!

By the way, we still have some open slots to give away for interested projects! So if you're a developer or member of an Open Source project that utilizes MySQL, here's your chance to show off your work to a very special audience. The exhibition will be open on Tuesday and Wednesday, but we'll provide each project with one free conference pass that will entitle you to …

"I'm Spartacus!": The future of PHP - after ten years of success Zend changes the architecture of the scripting language PHP

Important information: this article is the opinion of Björn Schotte in the role of the editor in chief of the PHP Magazin.

I was just reading the new Computerwoche (one of the most recognized weekly IT journals in Germany) and found an article called "PHP steht vor einem Generationenwechsel". It's quite interesting (irony!) and I wonder who gave the author of the article these information (please e-mail me, thanks). The article is available online, unfortunately only for Premium users

Just to cite a few things:

"Bisher besteht die Programmiersprache aus dem Zend-Core, der ausschliesslich von rund 20 Zend-Angestellten entwickelt wird." (Currently, the language [PHP] consists of Zend-Core which is developed exclusively by 20 Zend employees)
