10 years of MySQL User Conferences
+3 Vote Up -1Vote Down

In preparing for this month’s Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo, I’ve been reminiscing about the annual MySQL User Conference’s history – the 9 times it previously took place in its various reincarnations – and there are a lot of good things, fun things to remember.

2003 was the year that marked the first MySQL user conference independently organized by MySQL AB. It was called the “MySQL Users Conference” and took place at the Double Tree

Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo 2013: It feels like 2007 again

I actually don’t remember exactly whether it was in 2006, 2007 or 2008 — but around that time the MySQL community had one of the greatest MySQL conferences put on by O’Reilly and MySQL. It was a good, stable, predictable time.

Shortly thereafter, the MySQL world saw acquisitions, forks, times of uncertainly, more acquisitions, more forks, rumors (“Oracle is going to kill MySQL and the whole Internet”) and just a lot of drama and politics.

And now, after all this time some 6 or 7 years later, it feels like a MySQL Renaissance. All of the major MySQL players are coming to the

I feel a sense of pride when I think that I was involved in the development and maintenance of what was probably the first piece of software accepted into Debian which then had and still has direct up-stream support from Microsoft. The world is a better place for having Microsoft in it. The first operating system I ever ran on an 08086-based CPU was MS-DOS 2.x. I remember how thrilled I was when we got to see how my friend’s 80286 system ran BBS software that would cause a modem to dial a local system and display the application as if it were running on a local machine. Totally sweet.

When we were living at 6162 NE Middle in the nine-eight 292, we got an 80386 which ran Doom. Yeah, the original one, not the fancy new one with the double barrel shotgun, but it would probably run that one, too.

Big Data and MySQL – a Discussion with SiliconANGLE on theCUBE

Given all the focus and hype on Big Data, I was excited to have the chance at the recent O’Reilly Strata Show to sit down with Jeff Kelly, one of the top rated “Big Data” analysts, to give a MySQL perspective. Below is my interview with Jeff Kelly and David Floyer.

We had the privilege this past week to be invited to be part of the 2012 O’Reilly Strata “Making Data Work” Conference. Some of our photos from the event are here. At the event, we were excited to have Tokutek described in front of the approximately 2,500 attendees during the keynote sessions.

Overall, the diversity of topics discussed at the conference was impressive, spanning databases, developer tools, data visualization techniques, customer stories, and business implications. The full agenda is

Review of the O’Reilly Strata Making Data Work Conference

(reprinted from my guest blog for the Cloud Council of 7)

Monica Rogati of LinkedIn told a story of the early days at the firm, when the reporting system consisted of a single server under someone’s desk. One day, someone needed an Ethernet cable and unplugged the machine from the data outlet in the wall. LinkedIn’s data reporting, its life blood, instantly came to a

Regarding the MySQL Conference and Expo 2012

Last week, Baron Schwartz announced the Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo 2012.

Percona organized MySQL related conferences and seminars before, and from what I've heard, with considerable success and to satisfaction of its attendees, and there's one coming up in London in October 2011. But arguably, last week's announcement is quite different from the prior Percona conferences. It's different, because it seeks to replace the annual O'Reilly MySQL Conference and Expo.

Everyone that has read the announcement will have no trouble recognizing it as a

It is my pleasure to be your Program Chair, for the O’Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo 2010, to be held April 12-15 2010, in Santa Clara, California.

It is of course, not something I embark on alone. I have a program committee, comprising of some amazing folk: Brian Aker, Kaj Arno, Roland Bouman, Sheeri K. Cabral, Robin Schumacher, Baron Schwartz, and Jeff Wiss.

I can highly encourage you to submit a proposal. You have till January 27, 2010, which basically means, less than a month, so get cracking! I also can highly recommend you to register as an attendee.

I’ll talk more
