Speaking in October 2016
  • I’m thrilled to naturally be at Percona Live Europe Amsterdam from Oct 3-5 2016. I have previously talked about some of my sessions but I think there’s another one on the schedule already.
  • LinuxCon Europe – Oct 4-6 2016. I won’t be there for the whole conference, but hope to make the most of my day on Oct 6th.
  • MariaDB Developer’s meeting – Oct 6-8 2016 – skipping the first day, but will be there all day 2 and 3. I even have a session on day 3, focused on compatibility with MySQL, a topic I deeply care about ( …

MySQL Sandbox at the OTN MySQL Developers day in Paris, March 21st

On March 21st I will be in Paris, to attend the OTN MySQL Developers Day. Oracle is organizing these events all over the world, and although the majority are in the US, some of them are touching the good old European continent. Previous events were an all-Oracle show. Recently, the MySQL Community team has been asking for cooperation from the community, and in such capacity I am also presenting at the event, on the topic of testing early releases of MySQL in a sandbox. Of course, this is one of my favorite topics, but it is quite appropriate in this period, when Oracle has released a whole lot of preview features in its MySQL Labs. Which is another favorite topic of mine, since I was the one who insisted for having the Labs when I was working in the …

Call for participation for MySQL events - MySQL conference and FOSDEM

It's that time of the year where MySQL would be speakers are called to action. As usual, the main event is the MySQL spring conference, this year hosted by Percona. The call for participation to the MySQL Conference And Expo 2012 is still open until December 5th. To submit a proposal, you should register as a speaker and then fill in the form.
There is a conference committee which is already busy evaluating the proposals that have been submitted so far. The committee is demanding (I know for a fact, since I am in it!) and therefore, if you want to submit something, be very critical with yourself and polish your …

EU to probe Oracle Sun deal

According to Yahoo News (and WSJ, only for subscribers - thanks to @Oswald for mentioning it on twitter, see also Reuters), the EU opens an in-depth probe to the Oracle-Sun deal.

According to the source, EU Competition Commisioner Neelie Kroes said:

"The (European) Commission has an obligation to ensure that customers would not face reduced choice or higher prices as a result of this takeover,"

Furthermore, the commision set a January 19, 2010 deadline for its decision, Yahoo …

And the best open source license is …

UPDATE: The final vote is in and a winner has been declared, with Matt Asay and his arguments for the GPL taking the prize. You can see the debate or follow links to the other judges’ votes and thoughts here.

This is my assessment as a judge of the recent open source license debate held by the FOSS Learning Centre. We’ll have to begin with some qualifications and definitions, starting with the fact that there is no ‘best’ open source software license. Still, a star-studded open source software panel provided a lively, informative debate on the merits of some top open source licenses. For that, I congratulate and thank the panelists, Mike Milinkovich from the Eclipse Foundation arguing for the Eclipse Public License, Matt Asay of Alfresco arguing in favor of the GPL and David Maxwell from Coverity arguing for …

Coming to Munich for the MySQL™ Central EU Customer Conference

I am starting a trip of two days to Munich to attend tomorrow, October 21st 2008, the MySQL™ Central EU Customer Conference.

And.. sure! I am still wondering why I am coming stated that I don’t understand German :-/
I thought that the Conference was in English or at least part of it but.. eh eh eh.. it seems it isn’t.

Two things deceived me. The name “Central Europe” and the possibility to come with some friends which are used to go in Germany in this period to drink liters of beer.

Possibility no. two vanished cause one of them went away to U.S. for a short period @ Standford University and the others are very busy during this week.

Moral:

  • devote yourself to Euroregions and EU Political Integration as much as you can, :-0 …

EVCA: MySQL as a VC success story — Lessons Learned

Today at the Venture Capital Forum in Hilton Arc de Triomphe, Paris, I received the EVCA “Hall of Fame” Award on behalf of MySQL AB. What a timing, to meet with investment bankers and venture capitalists now!

In these times of a deep finance crisis, of no credit handed out by banks and of general doom and gloom, it felt great to be somewhat of an “everybody’s darling”. In the VC community, MySQL is seen as a great success — and in particular, we’re seen by European VCs as a European success story (despite over 50 % of our personnel and most of our Management Team being US-based, at the point of time when the VCs exited).

Side note: I don’t mind MySQL being seen as a European success story. We’re used to portraying ourselves as belonging to whatever geography is relevant for the moment. That …
