Hong Kong (OpenStack Summit)

I’ll be in Hong Kong for the upcoming OpenStack Summit Nov 5-8. I’d be thrilled to talk database things with others present, especially around Trove DBaaS (DataBase as a Service) and high availability MySQL for OpenStack deployments.

I was last in Hong Kong in 2010 when I worked for Rackspace. The closest office to me was in Hong Kong so that’s where I did my HR onboarding training. I remember telling friends on the Sunday night before leaving for Hong Kong that I may be able to make dinner later in the week purely depending on if somebody got back to me on if I was going to Hong Kong that week. I was, and I went. I took some photos while there.

Walking from the hotel where we were staying to the Rackspace office could be done pretty much entirely through buildings without going outside. There were bits of art around too, which is just kind of awesome – I’m …

Drizzle Meeting Photos

I didn’t take many photos at the Drizzle Meeting, although I did take a couple at the end at the Hopvine (just down the road from Brian’s place).

A good read is Brian’s wrap up of the meeting.

But we have (courtesy of Brian):

and a couple I took at the Hopvine:

Dublin sales meeting and group photo

The MySQL Telecom sales team is a global team, but it happens to be organized under the EMEA region of the MySQL sales department. Since the EMEA region is having a staff meeting in Dublin this week, it means also we in the telecom team are gathered here. A good opportunity to meet your globally dispersed collagues.

Zack Urlocker was the special guest star from headquarters. He presented a freudian-slip-slide saying that MySQL 5.1 will be released GA in July 2009. After lots of laughter he concessed that maybe engineering can pull it of faster, like maybe July 2008.

Another hot topic Zack talked about was to review how the integration with Sun is going...

...we concluded at least some of us are adapting just fine :-)

New York 1995

The wonder of film scanners. I have found a whole lot of old pictures on scratched up black and white film and dusty slides and with the scanner they are coming back. I'm considering doing a "picture every other day/week/..." thing. Hmmn..

Here's a picture from New York in the summer of 19925. Since this is my geeky weblog, then let me put it in those terms: Before I did Perl.Several years before I used OS/2. Four yearsA year before my first Linux box. Years before I used MySQL.

Oh, and before 2001 - obviously.

(See also large size, or the Flickr Entry if you want to mark it a favorite).

update: maybe it was 1995 and not 1992...
