Recently MySQL sponsored an open source survey conducted by the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG).  The study's findings have now been published and are available from IOUG and also from the MySQL site.  Most of the open source users are attracted by the cost-savings of open source (67%), with the freedom from vendor lock-in also noted as the second most significant factor (28%).  52% of those surveyed plan to increase their use of open source in the next year.  Not surprisingly, many run MySQL side-by-side their Oracle database servers --a pattern we have noticed for quite some time.  The survey also highlights some of the concerns organizations have with open source, with Enterprise support (54%)and security (35%) being key factors.

I’m reviewing proposals, that have come in when we made the CfP for the MySQL Conference & Expo 2008, and I’ve noticed some bugs in the CfP process. So let me take a break, gripe, and go back to the grindstone. I wish more people read the instructions for CfP submission (I’m even referring to you experienced presenters, might I add).

Via the CfP page, it says be creative, descriptive, and specific. I delve into this a little more, and add some of my thoughts.

1. Be creative - sure, a catchy title helps, but I personally review everything, even if you have the world’s most boring title
2. Be descriptive - please, heed to this. Don’t tell me that you’re going to expand on the abstract if its accepted, and don’t tell …

At first sight it seems MySQL AB has learned the lesson from its 5.0 release and is not rushing as much anymore with their releases as much. It seems that the 5.1 GA release was pushed back from this fall to Q1 2008. MySQL 6.0 will feature the new Falcon storage engine, but without foreign key and full text indexing. That will have to wait for MySQL 6.1. Now 6.1 is supposed to go into beta 2008/2009 which means a GA release is expected in 2009. So when exactly is MySQL 6.0 supposed to be done then? Last I heard was fall 2008, which would mean GA release for 6.0 and the beta release for 6.1 to be pretty close.

I hope this is not overly ambitious. MySQL 5.0 was to a large extend a feature checklist release. As such it took MySQL AB quite a lot …
