How you can test your Solaris application with MySQL

Are you interested in testing your Solaris application with MySQL, but don't have the time or resources to setup an environment locally?  Today, Dan Powers reminded me that Sun has made it easy to get pre-configured environments.  The first is via the EZQual Virtual Lab, which allows partners access to secure, no-cost, test environments.  The second is through Amazon EC2 with OpenSolaris.  More details can be found at Dan's blog here.  And, if you need some help, let us know.

Test your Solaris Application on MySQL

There are a couple of easy ways to test your Solaris application with MySQL ("the world's most popular opensource database").   Of course, you can always setup a Solaris or OpenSolaris environment and download it (70-80MB) and then install/configure locally.   However, if you don't want to go through the hassle of setting up the System, OS, & database yourself, Sun has made it easy to get your hands on pre-configured bits in a couple of other efficient ways.

Use the EZQual Virtual Lab.  Sun Partner's can get access to secure, no-cost, test environments (within Solaris containers/zones).  Here's the information directly from the program:

We've set up a secure, …

MySQL University: Being host and presenter at the same time

Today, Martin "MC" Brown gave an overview of MySQL on openSolaris. Due to Yours Truly arriving late MC had to start a new Dimdim session (sorry for that!). So MC was the host and the presenter at the same time.

Interestingly (and annoyingly), this seemed to have a bad effect on sound quality. To most attendees, MC's voice sounded garbled. To me, he sounded like at least one octave too low. The sound recording, though, sounds all fine. I suspect that being the host of a Dimdim session has a bad effect on voice quality (the same thing has happened to me regularly, but I thought it was due to packet loss over my wifi or something). So, for the next MySQL University session on …

Introducing Olio

For the last few months, I've been working feverishly to get the web2.0kit open-sourced. What is the web2.0kit, you ask ? We introduced this at our session at the Velocity conference. The web2.0kit is a reference architecture to help anyone running a web application evaluate the suitability, functionality and performance of various web technologies.

Most web2.0 sites today use open source languages and frameworks such as PHP, Ruby on Rails and Java EE to develop their applications. Deployments of these applications also use popular open source servers such as Apache httpd, MySQL, memcached and glassfish. Many other servers/technologies such as lighttpd, nginx, mogileFS, mongrel, thin, JRuby are also gaining popularity. To help understand the differences in …

Scaling MySQL on a 256-way T5440 server with ZFS

Recently, some tests were conducted at Sun that show that MySQL with ZFS can scale on our servers with Cool Threads technology.  These tests show that MySQL can scale on these systems with  little tuning expertise.  The tests used database sharding and application partitioning to obtain the optimal configuration.  Some details of the tests can be found here.

Sun systems with CoolThreads technology deliver breakthrough performance, scalability and reliability with dramatic space, power, and cost efficiency on Sun's proven open source chip multithreading (CMT) architecture. In addition, you get open source Solaris 10 OS and virtualization technology at no extra cost.  Take the Sun savings challenge …

MySQL: Introduction, Features and Benefits

I took a 1-hour long session (was supposed to be 2 hours, but my planned agenda was exhausted) for students of engineering colleges across Karnataka studying in colleges under VTU. The session was delivered via EDUSAT under the Sun Microsystems- VTU EDUSAT e-learning programme.

It was fun. However, the fact that there was no interaction with the students felt a little dumb. (I was speaking on the camera which was beamed live)

These are my slides:

I also put together a short Quiz for them:
