If you have attended the latest two MySQL Users Conference
and Expo, you will know Sheeri. She was awarded for two years in a row
community contributor of the year. And she is seriously
determined to see someone else on stage next year. That's why
she has been pushing other people toward the community
scenes, paving the way for other contributors to surface.
But, you know, Sheeri is really good, and we have been trying to hire her, without much success. So we decided that since she is such a great catalyst, we should let her run part of the show. Embedded in the next MySQL Users Conference and Expo, there will be a MySQLCamp, of which she will be fully in charge. |

Reggie Burnett is one of the those engineers at MySQL who deserves greater recognition. At a company dominated by LAMP-stackers, Reggie stands up and shouts for what some inside MySQL would view as a minority: developers using Windows to develop MySQL applications.
The funny thing about this is that Windows developers aren't really a minority at all are they? Both MySQL and Sun have statistics which show that more than fifty percent of developers use the Windows as their primary development platform. Whether or not the applications they develop get deployed on a Windows server, developers are actively utilizing a Windows development environment, typically using the Visual Studio IDE.
So, one thing that bothers Reggie, and me, is the lack of quality resources that we have to help support the MySQL on Windows developers. Hopefully, together we can change all that.

The MySQL Users Conference and Expo 2009 has open its Call for Papers. The past edition had close to 2,000 participants, and the next one shouldn't be any poorer. The theme for the next conference is Innovation Everywhere. After being a earthquake in the business world with the acquisition by Sun, MySQL continues its course towards innovation, by pursuing new users, new markets, new needs with continuous innovation. |
A novelty, compared to past edition, is an embedded MySQLCamp within the conference. It will be an open space, driven and organized by the community, oriented to developers and advanced users.
Sometimes there are funny communication styles between people who are geographically distributed and working together all the time. Recently one of our team members echoed back to me some answers I gave over a chat session:
Q: Is it OK for me to buy quad-core servers? A: The old man walks slow but carries much, whilst [...]
I had a nice chat with Kieran from Acquia at DrupalCon last week - we discussed how people running local Drupal user groups could expand their outreach into other communities, in particular into the MySQL User Groups. Scott Mattoon captured our conversation on video, which is now available on blip.tv:
The gist of what we talked about: if you are organizing a local Drupal User Group Meetup, check out http://mysql.meetup.com …
[Read more]Attention MySQL engineers and Drizzle contributors: upgrade to Bazaar 1.6.1 now to get some fairly massive performance speedups for bzr branch commands. As I noted in my last article on Launchpad code management, Bazaar 1.5 was having some performance issues when branching large project trees such as MySQL. In the article, I showed it was taking Bazaar 1.5 91 minutes to do the initial branch. With John Arbash Meinel's performance patches, the time to branch was cut down to 23 minutes, which is a fantastic improvement.
Ubuntu users: grab the 1.6.1 Bazaar package for your Ubuntu version from the Launchpad.net Bazaar Project Package Archive.
Mac OSX users:: grab the disk image here, with …

In my last blog post, I discussed storing conditions in the database. For a
quick reminder, I suggested that you store all the under-lying
conditions (the if-then-else statements) from your code in your
database. From my example, I used "did the sales person sell more
then average for that day" ( sold_more_than_average BOOLEAN) and
the answer would be True or False.
In this post, I would like to discuss connecting those same
conditions with a decision table. Before I get started, I would
like to take a moment and reminisce about some of the previous
posts I talked about decision tables to help explain them
better.

Calling all students!
Here’s an easy way to make USD$500 (grand prize), or USD$250 (five runners up). All you have to do is use the MySQL database (5.1) and the GlassFish application server (v2 Update Release 2) to develop a cool web application and write a review of your experience using these products.
The deadline for this is October 22, 2008. Remember to read the contest details, as it lists eligibility criteria, and how we’re judging the entries.
As a judge, here’s my advice:
- Make me go “wow!”
- Use some of the new features in MySQL 5.1 - think XML, …
