Late feedback

MySQL Community team asked me to write about Devconf 2013 few months ago. Conference was in June, 2013, but I remembered about this my promise only now: month later after my participating in MySQL Connect and Expert Troubleshooting seminar (change country to United Kingdom if you see blank page). I think it is too late for the feedback, but I still have few thoughts which I want to record.

DevConf (former PHPConf) always was a place where I tried new topics. At first, because I know audience there very well and they will be bored if I repeat a story which I was telling last year, but also because it is much easier to get …

Laine will explain the options for running MySQL at high volumes at Amazon Web Services, exploring options around database as a service, hosted instances/storages and all appropriate availability, performance and provisioning considerations using real-world examples from Call of Duty, Obama for America and many more.

Laine will show how to build highly available, manageable and performant MySQL environments that scale in AWS—how to maintain then, grow them and deal with failure. Some of the specific topics covered are:

My agenda for MySQL NoSQL Cloud 2013

On October 15 and 16 I'll take the ferry to be at the MySQL NoSQL Cloud conference in Buenos Aires, and the schedule looks really nice so far. I think it's a great opportunity for people in this region to get up to date with what's going on in the MySQL ecosystem, and to have good discussions with members of the community that aren't usually around here.

I still haven't decided my complete agenda, as in some cases it's difficult to pick one track and miss the other one, but for now, here are some highlighted sessions I'm definitely attending:

Creating custom rules in MySQL Enterprise Monitor

Quite some time ago, I published scripts to implement password policies for MySQL, and promised to show how to expose violations of that policy via MySQL Enterprise Monitor (MEM).  That stalled somewhat with other objectives, but I want to revisit it now that MEM 3.0 is GA.  If you haven’t tried MEM 3.0 yet, consider doing so – it’s quick and easy to set up.

Many people don’t realize that MEM can be extended to monitor things beyond MySQL Server health, including visibility into application state as observed from the database.  In part of the hands-on-lab I recently led at MySQL Connect, we …

Speaking at Percona University Sept 12th

I’ll be joining Percona for a free day of MySQL education and insight at their upcoming Percona University Washington DC event on September 12th. My topic is accessing MySQL from Google’s Go programming language. I’ve learned a lot about this over the past year or so, and hopefully I can help you get a quick-start.

If you’re not familiar with Go, it’s the darling of the Hacker News crowd these days. Anything with “Go” in its title gets to the front page for at least a little while! Go is a great systems programming language. It’s safe to say I’ve fallen in love with it, and it’s now my favorite programming language of all those I’ve used over my entire career. I chose it because it’s ideally suited for VividCortex’s agent programs (zero dependencies, compiled, lightweight, high performance, robust, makes concurrency …
