MySQL Cluster 7.3 GA – webinar replay + Q&A now available

If you missed the recent MySQL Cluster 7.3 GA webinar then the replay is now available here.

In the webinar replay you can learn how MySQL Cluster 7.3 has delivered key features enabling the latest generation of web and mobile services to take advantage of high scalability on commodity hardware, SQL and NoSQL interfaces and 99.999% availability; these include:

  • Support for Foreign Key constraints – implemented to be as compatibile with InnoDB as possible

Benchmarking the Performance Impact of Foreign Keys in MySQL Cluster 7.3 GA

FOREIGN KEYs in MySQL Cluster is a big step forward. It is now possible to run enterprise software with NDB Cluster as the storage backend. Over the years, the lack of FOREIGN KEYs have been one of the most limiting pieces of functionality. Who wants to fiddle with TRIGGERs or recode applications to enforce data integrity?
But finally, it is here. It is implemented natively at the Data Node level, where NDB stores its data. It is well known that FOREIGN KEYs come with an overhead. E.g., when writing a record into a child table, the existence must be checked in the parent table. Since data is distributed across multiple Data Nodes, the child record and parent record may be on different nodes or shards (Node Groups). Hence there is extra work to be done in terms of internal triggers and network communication, the latter being the more costly. The performance impact must be taken into account when doing …

New Member of the Cluster API Family: The Native Node.js Connector

MySQL Cluster 7.3 went GA yesterday and with it came a new member of the MySQL Cluster API family: mysql-js – a native Node.js connector. mysql-js uses the NDB API to connect directly to the data nodes which improves performance compared to executing queries through the MySQL nodes.

For an introduction to mysql-js and installation instructions I will recommend taking a look at the official API documentation and Andrew Morgan’s blog; the latter also has an overview of the new features in MySQL Cluster 7.3 in general.

To get a feel for how the new API works, I went ahead and created …

MySQL Cluster 7.3 GA – Includes MySQL Cluster Auto-Installer

MySQL Cluster 7.3 has just been declared Generally Available (and with it the new MySQL Cluster Auto-Installer) – download it from here.

Deploying a well configured cluster has just got a lot easier! Oracle have released a new auto-installer/configurator for MySQL Cluster that makes the processes extremely simple while making sure that the cluster is well configured for your application. A single command launches the web-based wizard which then steps you through configuring the cluster; to keep things even simpler, it will automatically detect the resources on your target machines and use these results together with the type of workload you specify in order to determine values for the key configuration parameters.

For a broader view of what is being released – check out this …

Using JavaScript and Node.js with MySQL Cluster – First steps

We’re very pleased to announce that MySQL Cluster 7.3 has gone GA; for a full run-down of the new features and enhancements, take a look at the "MySQL Cluster 7.3 New Features for Internet-Scale Performance with Carrier-Grade Availability" white paper but this post will focus on just one of the features – the MySQL Cluster JavaScript Driver for Node.js. The post will step you through setting everything up so that you can get your first Node.js code reading and writing from MySQL Cluster.

Background

MySQL Cluster is a distributed, shared nothing database that provides linear scalability, 99.999% availability and high read/write throughput with low latency. SQL is …

Biggest MySQL related news in the last 24 hours, Day 2

Continuing on from yesterday, the biggest news that I’ve noted in the past 24 hours:

  1. The commitment from Oracle’s MySQL team to release a new GA about once every 24 months, with a Developer Milestone Release (DMR), with “GA quality” every 4-6 months. Tomas Ulin announced MySQL 5.7 DMR1 (milestone 11) [download, release notes, manual]. He also announced MySQL Cluster 7.3 DMR2 [download, …
