Percona University @Montevideo, FISL & São Paulo MySQL Meetup

Peter Zaitsev at last year’s Percona University event in Montevideo

Later this week I’m excited to depart on a trip to South America. First I will stop in Montevideo, Uruguay, to meet with Percona’s team out there as well as to participate in our next Percona University event on April 29.

For those who do not know, Percona University events are free to attend and packed with technical presentations about MySQL and surrounding technologies, delivered by members of the Percona team and community speakers. Even though attendance is free, because space is limited you will need to …

What have I been up to lately?

Despite my best intentions, I haven't posted on this blog for a while, which is a shame! I've become busy writing on so many other places since I moved into my new role in the Oracle Linux product management team in April. I've learned a lot and I am feeling quite at home here! The team is excellent and very nice to work with — I am slowly getting the "Big Picture".

But even though I've been neglecting this blog, there are a lot of things that are publicly visible and document some of my activites:

I've created two podcasts for the Oracle Linux podcasts:

FISL12 -- Open Source show with Music and Dancing in Brazil.

Not so long ago, it was easy to judge a technical conference by the number of small screwdrivers1 you picked up as swag from the show. Open source shows usually have similar elements in common with each other like someone in a penguin costume, at least one guy in a kilt2, piles of Linux distro CDROMs, and bonus points for either Mad Dog or Linus in person. Last week I was in Porto Alegre, Brazil for FISL where they had all that plus folk songs and dancing3. They really raised the bar for open source shows.
The MySQL Community is large, vibrant, and inquisitive. Davi Arnaut, one of our developers who lives in the North of Brazil, presented on MySQL 5.5 and 5.6 to a full room. I was in the Oracle booth answering questions about new features, workbench and the …

FISL12 Trip Report - Special Appearance by "Javali" and "Code Monkey"

FISL is the biggest open source conference in Latin America and had about 7000 participants in the FISL 12 that concluded earlier this week. This was my third consecutive year (2010 and 2009) and as every year the conference was packed with lectures, workshops, demonstrations, booths, presentations, and lot more.

Anil Gaur, VP of Java EE Platform and GlassFish, gave a presentation on "Oracle GlassFish Server: A flexibly, light-weight, and production-ready Java EE 6". There were about 100 attendees in the …

Oracle at fisl12 (Porto Alegre, Brazil, 2011-06-29/2011-07-02)

fisl12 is likely the largest free and open source software event in Latin America. This year, it takes place in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from June 29th to July 2nd. Oracle is a gold sponsor of the event and I will attend it as a speaker. I feel honoured and excited to be there – for me it will be the first visit to the South American continent.

They already have over 3000 registered attendees, so this definitely is going to be a great conference. There is quite a number of well-known names on the speaker roster and I look forward to meeting a lot of familar faces there.

The agenda is still under development but quite impressive already – …

Pythian Goes to FISL 10

Hi All!

This year, the International Free Software Forum celebrated its 10th anniversary. It happened last week in Porto Alegre.

Pythian presented a session on Thursday called 8 Rules for Designing More Secure Applications with MySQL.

As promised, here are the slides we used on that session: 8 Simple Rules to Design Secure Apps with MySQL (PDF).

Cheers!
