Disaster Recovery with Galera Cluster 2021 Edition Webinar

We talk a lot about Galera Cluster for MySQL being great for High Availability, but what about Disaster Recovery (DR)? Database outages may occur when you lose a data centre due to power outages or natural disaster, so why not plan appropriately in advance?

In this webinar, we will discuss the business considerations including achieving the highest possible uptime, focus on business impact, risk mitigation, and disaster recovery itself. What scenarios are right for you: fully synchronous replication across various data centres? A mix of synchronous and asynchronous to an offsite location?

We will discuss Galera Cluster, mixed setups, the use of proxies, and also evaluate some third party solutions. We will debunk claims about how Galera Cluster might not work across data centers, tell you how to successfully do this across data centres, with performance tuning settings for all the segments. Galera 4 has also been released, making …

Webinar: Galera Cluster for MySQL Streaming Replication for Large & Long Lasting Transactions In-Depth

A significant improvement has come to Galera Cluster 4 for MySQL, in the form of streaming replication. When you are dealing with large (greater than 2GB in size) or long running transactions, previous releases of Galera Cluster would reject the transaction; in the current release transactions can be split into fragmented chunks and those rows can be replicated in chunks to the other nodes even before commit. This is the feature that will remove you from all cluster stall issues due to large transaction processing!

While disabled by default, you can use it and configure it dynamically, and there is also the ability to monitor streaming replication progress. Come to this webinar to learn from the primary author, Seppo Jaakola, on why he implemented the feature, how you can use it, finding the optimal fragment size based on workload, and the design trade-offs for the initial release in where the focus was more on functionality over …

Announcing the Release Candidate of MySQL 8.0 + Galera 4

A time for new beginnings beckons upon us, and Codership is pleased to announce the much anticipated Release Candidate of MySQL 8.0 that comes with Galera 4. It comes with MySQL 8.0.19 and includes the Galera Replication Library 4.5 Release Candidate and wsrep API version 26.

Galera 4 and MySQL 8.0.19 have many new features, but here are some of the highlights:

  • Streaming replication to support large transactions by splitting transaction replication then applying them in smaller fragments.
  • Improved foreign key support, as write set certification rules are optimised and there will be a reduction in the number of foreign key related false conflicts in certifications.
  • Group commit is …

EverData reports Galera Cluster outshines Amazon Aurora and RDS

EverData a leading data center and cloud solution provider in India has recently been writing quite a bit about Galera Cluster and it seems like we should highlight them. For one, they’ve talked about streaming replication in Galera Cluster 4, available in MariaDB Server 10.4. However, let us focus on their post: Galera Cluster vs Amazon RDS: A Comprehensive Review.

They compared MySQL with MHA, MySQL with Galera Cluster and also Amazon Web Services (AWS) Relational Database Service (RDS). Their evaluation criteria was to see how quickly there would be recovery after a crash, as well as performance while managing concurrent reads and writes.

In their tests, they found that time for …

Running Galera Cluster effectively on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and comparing it to RDS and Aurora (EMEA and USA webinar)

Do you want to run Galera Cluster in the cloud? Why not learn to setup a 3-node Galera Cluster using Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), and run it yourself (3-node because this is the minimum preferred size; you can have a 5, 7, or 9 node cluster too — not in the demo though!). In this webinar, we will cover the steps to do this, with a demonstration of how easy it is for you to do. We will also cover how you may want to load balance traffic to your Galera Cluster using a proxy like ProxySQL.

In addition, we will cover why you may want to run a 3-node (or more) Galera Cluster (multi-master synchronous clusters) instead of (or in addition to) using Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) MySQL, which has the ability to have asynchronous replication (Read Replicas), and High Availability provided by DRBD (Multi-AZ). We will also cover where Galera Cluster differs from Amazon Aurora RDS for MySQL.

Galera Cluster at Percona Live Austin, DataOps.Barcelona and where next

It is July now, and summer is upon us. The team at Codership are busy making Galera Cluster 4 for MySQL, and we are just hot of the heels of celebrating the launch of Galera Cluster 4 with MariaDB Server 10.4

At the end of May, Galera Cluster had a booth and several talks at Percona Live Austin. This was the first time the event happened there, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The key takeaway from that event would be Seppo Jaakola’s talk titled: Galera Cluster New Features. It covered the then upcoming MariaDB Server 10.4 release with Galera Cluster 4, went in-depth into how streaming replication works …
