Less than two weeks ago, I posted my Database Survey. As of just a few minutes ago, I have had 215 responses. That's pretty awesome. I'd like to get at least twice that though.
I haven't looked deeply at it yet to see if there are any trends. I think it will be best to wait until the survey is closed. I did look at some of the responses, kind of as a quality check. Looks like MySQL is fairly well represented. I didn't see any DB2 responses (for primary database). I did see plenty of Oracle and a few Postgres.
I will leave it up for another 2 1/2 weeks (for a total of 4 weeks). If you haven't taken it yet, please do so if you get a few minutes. It only takes 5-10 minutes as there is only 25 questions.
Also, if you have a blog, post on forums (without spamming), or have any other ways to spread the word, I would …

Infoworld published the 2008 Bossies, Best Of Open Source Software. There are 8 categories and none of them are database:

- Developer tools
- Enterprise applications
- Networking
- Platforms and middleware
- Productivity applications
- Security
- Storage
I had to look through several of them before I found the database category under Platforms and middleware. Slide 4 is the magic slide:
It says:

[Read more]Before I get to post my OSCON reflection I see I didn’t post this (which I reference).
At OSCON opening keynotes Tim O’Reilly Interviews Monty Widenius & Brian Aker. This provided some interesting answers in a Q & A session. Here is some of the discussion.
TO: So 6 months in. How is it with Sun?
BA: Really rewarding environment. My first question was? You are
going to send me free H/W. No H/W has been delivered yet, or
access to the masses, still hoping. Sun is a very engineering
driven company.
MW. Thanks God we didn’t go public. Starting to do closed sourced
components, going public this would have continued.
TO: Sun saved MySQL from public market/ insulated from
market.
MW: 6 months in, Sun still trying to figure out what they bought.
Sun has made a commitment to open source throughout the
organization. …
I was there in the meetup and my feeling was a mix about the same. It was nice to have Kaj here (for the first time) and listen to him about Sun's acquisition. On the other hand it was disheartening to see so few people from corporates turning up. It was almost negligible. I'm still positive on this and do expect many more people to turn up. There were a total of three talks in the meet and then we had some chit chat with people.
In his first talk, Kaj first greeted everybody in Hindi, Tamil and Kannada and many were delighted. Kaj touched various aspects of Sun's acquisition and also their on-boarding struggle. He also mentioned about MySQL considering Sun's liberal SCA in place of their stricter CLA. (I haven't gone through SCA to actually comment on it's benefits)
Second talk by Thava was on how to contribute code to …
