Andrii Nikiti’s son Needs Our Help

(Reposted from Zack Urlocker’s blog)

Andrii Nikitin, one of the MySQL support engineers located in Ukraine, has asked for help from MySQLers and so I’m sharing this information to the community at large. Andrii’s son Ivan, who is 2 1/2, is in need of a bone marrow transplant operation. This will require going to a clinic in Europe that will not be covered by regular insurance. So Andrii has aksed to see if we could help raise funds. The cost is expected to be 150,000 - 250,000 EUROS. A huge amount for an engineer from Ukraine to cover. But a small amount by many people could make a big difference.

Many MySQLers have kicked in to help out, but more is needed. Ivan’s health has taken a turn for the worse recently and the issue is now quite pressing. Even a small donation could mean the difference between life and death for Ivan.

I hope some of you who use MySQL or have young kids will join me in making a …

Useful stuff - 2008 - first half

Having a Google account is sometimes useful in ways you hadn’t planned for. For example, at a few different employers I’ve been at, I’ve had to prepare for reviews by providing a list of accomplishments to my supervisor. One decent tool for generating this list is email, though it can take some time. Another useful tool is the Web History feature of your Google account.

Though this isn’t necessarily indicative of everything I’ve accomplished in the first half of 2008 per se, it’s definitely indicative of the types of things I’ve generally been into so far this year, and it’s interesting to look back. What does your Web History say?

  • Gearman - this is used by some rather large web sites, notably Digg. It reminds me a little of having Torque and Maui, but geared toward more general-purpose applications. In fact, it was never clear to me that …

Cloud computing hype overload

I’ve been working with what I used to call “utility computing” tools for about 6-9 months. However, for about the past 2 months, I’ve been seeing the term “cloud computing” all over the place, and there is so much buzz surrounding it that it’s reaching that magical point best described using Alan Greenspan’s words: “Irrational Exuberance”.

When Alan Greenspan used those words to describe the attitudes of investors toward the markets, what he was basically saying was that there were people who didn’t really know what they were doing, putting more money than they ought, into things they knew relatively little about. Further, he was saying that the decisions people were making with regards to where to put their money were a) bad, or at least b) not based on sound reasoning, or the ‘facts on the ground’.

This, I think, is where we are at with “cloud computing”. The blog post that put me over the edge is …

Caching and TTL behavior

So, I am working on MemProxy some.  Mainly, I am trying to implement more of the Cache-Control header's many options.  The one that has me a bit perplexed s-maxage.  Particularly when combined with max-age.

s-maxage is the maximum time in seconds an item should remain in a shared cache.  So, if s-maxage is set by the application server, my proxy should keep it for that amount of time at the most.  Up until now, I have just been looking at max-age.  But, s-maxage is the proper one for a proxy to use if it is present.  I do not send the s-maxage through because this is a reverse proxy and, IMO, that is proper behavior for an application accelerating proxy.  However, I do send forward the max-age value that is set by the application servers.  If no max-age is set, I send a default as defined in the script.  Also, if no-cache …

Erlang User Group Berlin

Berlin has a long history of blooming user groups and the Erlang User Group Berlin will be no exception!

That’s right, Germany’s capital and one of the nicest places to be in Europe (among all the other nice places, hooray for plurality) finally has place for Erlang enthusiasts. That is in fact a pleonasm, I haven’t found a single soul yet who is not enthusiastic about working with Erlang, but what do I know?

Anyway.

Join the discussion group and help to pick a date for meetings.

If you are an Erlang developer on visit in Berlin, let us know, so we can have an out-of-order meeting with you.

Sorry if that shows up at a seemingly non-related planet feed, this is a spam measure and won’t happen again. Thanks for your patience.

At OSCON

Boy am I thrilled.

OSCON, back in the old days, was the Mekka for open source developers. Glorious but out of reach and too far away. I don’t know if that image holds true still, but judging the enthusiastic reports by previous attendees, it does. And this year I will be able to attend.

I will not only be able to attend, I will even give a presentation. You can guess the topic of course and I don’t want to stretch this post into advertising CouchDB yet again. (I’ll leave that to other posts :-)

This is a heads-up for all the friends and colleagues I’ve known and worked with for quite a few years now but haven’t had a chance to meet in a while. If you are coming to OSCON, please get in touch ( …
