Redmonk Gets It

Stephen O'Grady, analyst and co-founder of RedMonk, is a guy who clearly understands both the existing IT industry and the impact of open source.  I've had the pleasure of getting to know Stephen over a few years and while I have not always agreed with all of his analysis, I always respect that he has done his homework to understand the real issues.  While many of the larger analyst firms in the industry have a reputation for staying at the 50,000 foot level, RedMonk dives down to a much deeper level.

Stephen's blog, tecosystems, is a good place to get familiar with Stephen's thinking.  He's recently written about the changing landscape in the database industry as a result of open source technology.  His analysis is …

New version of ADO.NET provider for MySQL is available

The following announcement came out this morning on the Annouce mailing list for MySQL:

"MySQL Connector/Net 1.0.7, a new version of the fully-managed, ADO.Net provider for the MySQL database system has been released.  This release is the latest production release of the 1.0 series and is suitable for use with any MySQL version including MySQL 4.1 or 5.0."

You can download the provider here: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/net/1.0.html

An important note that came with the announcement: while this package does contain .NET 2.0 binaries, they are simply .NET 2.0 compiles of the existing 1.x codebase. Therefore, it doesn't support the new features in ADO.NET 2.0.

Asterisk@Home 1.5

So I just finished installing Asterisk at Home 1.5. For some reason I got it into my head back in August before Oscon that I should format the entire asterisk server at the house and start over from scratch. Which means that I have not had a home phone in months. Its arguable if I have ever had one for the house in the first place, I cherish hacking the phone more then it actually being functional. I had been using a fairly early version of asterisk that I had hacked up/patched to do a few oddball things which are now done directly by the server (most of them had to do with fixing it so that all information was loaded from MySQL).

1.5 is definitely better then 1.2, for instance it works. The only bug I have found so far is that if I make changes in the setup I need to go into asterisk via "asterisk -r" and type reload so that all of the changes take place, otherwise it works fine. It took all of a day and a half to reload all of the …

Back to Windows for Awhile....

I‘ve been running Fedora Core 3 (and 4) for my “daily driver“ for the last year and a half or so, and have been relatively happy with them, but am moving back to Windows (specifically Server 2003) for awhile for my development work, mainly to become familar again with the platform from a users‘ perspective to help the folks working on making MySQL a better Windows product.

Don‘t worry, I still run Linux (at least 3 flavors currently in the house all the time, along with OpenBSD), so I‘m not a total defector!

Things I‘ve noticed since moving back:

1) It starts quicker than Linux (although this may be related to bit rot, this is a brand new 2k3 install)

2) Eclipse seems snappier (although this doesn‘t surprise me)

3) I have to pay for antivirus support, and unfortunately there aren‘t a lot of vendors that don‘t charge through the nose for a server OS even though I‘m using it as a …
