Today is moving day at OmniTI. We’re moving to our new offices in Maple Lawn. They are pretty kick ass. Of course, moving means packing up all of your things and taking it to the new place, or perhaps throwing a bunch of it out. When I first came to OmniTI, I sat in a desk next to Wez Furlong for about 2 weeks. I’ve had I think 6 different desks since then, and now reside in an office. During all that moving, I tried to consolidate; I’m not sure I succeeded. While cleaning and packing, I decided to write down all of the stuff I had collected in my office; I’ve thrown almost all of it away, so from now on it can live on the internets for posterity.

I wrote about the performance gains with libmysqld a few days ago but I had just too many things in my head to do a proper comparison with the MySQL Cluster / Server protocol. Yes, libmysqld is faster, but not as much faster as I thought, and blogged about. What happened was that I had another thing to try which I had forgotten about, which was to test using the Client / Server protocol without the dreaded CLIENT_COMPRESS flag (see more on this here).

The MySQL documentation section has always had this Topic Guides page containing links to the docs for the various MySQL Connectors -- the official database drivers for various languages and programming technologies. That is the most convenient way to get the information for each Connector in PDF form, rather than downloading the entire Ref Man PDF. For HTML, it was more of a shortcut, because

Here comes the next open source mysqlnd plugin prototype: PECL/mysqlnd_mux. The PHP mysqlnd connection multiplexing plugin shares a connection to MySQL between multiple user connection handles. Connection multiplexing aims to reduce connect time and lowers the total number of concurrenly opened connections. The first is primarily a benefit for the client, the latter is great for the server. Multiplexing may be most desired in environments with many short-lived connections and weak client-side pooling - such as a PHP web application.

If you ever had a replication slave that is severely behind, you probably noticed that it’s not catching up with a busy master at a steady pace. Instead, the “Seconds behind master” is going up and down so you can’t really tell whether the replica is catching up or not by looking at just few samples, unless these are spread apart. And even then you can’t tell at a glance when it is going to catch up.

Normally, the “severely behind” thing should not happen, but it does often happen in our consulting practice:

• sometimes replication would break and then it needs to catch up after it is fixed,
• other times new replication slave is built from a backup which is normally hours behind,
• or, it could be that replication slave became too slow to catch up due to missing index
