The first day of JavaOne is already over!

In the past Sunday used to be a more relaxing day with ‘just’ some JavaOne activities going on. Sunday used to be a soft day to prepare yourself for an exhausting week. This is now over as JavaOne is expanding; Sunday is now an integral part of the conference. One of the side effect of this extra day is that some activities related to JavaOne and OpenWorld such as MySQL Connect are being push to start a day earlier on Saturday (can you spot the pattern here?).

On the GlassFish front, Sunday was a very busy day! It started at the Moscone Center with the annual GlassFish Community Event where the Java EE 7 and GF 4 roadmaps were presented and discussed. During the event, different GlassFish users such as ZeroTurnaround (the JRebel guys), Grupo RBS and …

A sneak peek inside the Row Based Replication (RBR) in MySQL 5.6

With MySQL 5.6 coming closer to its release, I got a chance to sneak a look into the Row Based Replication (RBR). 5.6 release of MySQL will be a replication features packed one, and it is for this reason I write  another post on the new enhancements in Row Based Replication(RBR). RBR provides a safe way of replicating between master and slave and thats why RBR enhancements become even more important. RBR in 5.6 is far more optimized than what it was before and we hope it will be fun to deploy, maintain and use.
Folowing are some interesting enhancements in RBR in MySQL 5.6 Replication.
1. Optimized row image:Large data transfer between master and slave while using RBR is a thing of past. Why log complete rows on the master? Why not just the changed colums?  The MySQL 5.6 release enables a DBA to configure the master to log …

Another day at MySQL connect 2012

Today was another good day, but I had a problem with one presentation and keynote.

the "Big Data is a Big Scam: Most of the Time". There is something that is not convincing me in the architecture,

and is mainly base on the lack of numbers and match between requirements and implementation.

The presentation was interesting from some aspects, and the tile approach is probably a good one.

I have enjoy the general idea and I did found awesome the bravery of setting up a circular replication cross geographic regions.

Never the less I remain bewildered by the tiles approach numbers, probably because the presentation was missing of few additional information.

Just to be more clear I was trying to understand better the real number and how works.

As for example if each tile is compose by 1 MySQL node, and …

MySQL Oracle Connect 2012: Day Two

Another good day today: I attended the keynotes and found them quite interesting.

I especially liked the way Twitter uses MySQL to build up a NoSQL solution. Jokes aside, I took a few notes on things I must analyze and dig in.

The introduction of the Paypal models seemed very interesting, which brought me to attend the presentation later on. It was well constructed and had some good theoretical work, but I was quite disappointed. I found the presentation incomplete and missing real numbers for the MySQL Cluster NDB setup.

I attended the presentation done by Ronald B. It was good — nothing really advanced, but it was on purpose. He was very informative and explanatory for a junior MySQL DBA, and I enjoyed his presentation for the logical approach and construction.

Ronald also highlighted that it was the content of less then a chapter of one of his books and was done on purpose to give an initial understanding of …

New XAMPP 1.8.1 for Windows and Linux

What's the best thing to do on a Sunday night? Correct, get a new XAMPP version out to the Internet. Of course, what else? And here it is again, an updated XAMPP.

The most important updates are: Apache 2.4.3, MySQL 5.5.27, PHP 5.4.7, and phpMyAdmin 3.5.2.2.

Yes, last Friday Oracle released a new MySQL 5.5.28. This version is not part of XAMPP. The time was to short to include this also in this release.

Again, we're not able to get also the Mac OS X version updated. Time is the problem. Is there anyone out there with good knowledge about GCC and AMP on Mac OS X?

Get the downloads and more details on the platform specific XAMPP project page.
