OSCON: Jonathan Schwartz Interview

By nat

At OSCON in August, I interviewed Jonathan Schwartz. Here's a transcription of that interview, the audio of which is available on IT Conversations. Jonathan commented on it in his blog. Don't forget that OSCON 2006 will be July 24-28 2006.

Some highlights from the interview:

  • Anyone who tells you that open source isn't safe is flat-out lying to you
  • I don't think there's one license or one hammer for all nails in the world
  • Every product at Sun …

Thanks to Sheeri for stepping up as the meetup coordinator and getting this going.

Oracle 10g XE - Free is not Free

Dimitri has an interesting post entitled "And Free Oracle for All" over on his blog about Oracle 10g XE:

At quick glance all features of 10g release 2 supported in XE, including Oracle Text for full text indexing. Maximum DB size is limited by 4Gb and XE will use only one CPU. I guess it‘s fair limitations for entry level, pilot and even for many medium-sized applications.

Nice move, Oracle. Why would I want to use MySql now? ;-)

My easiest response is that it‘s only free to a point, and then guess what:

  • Need support beyond what you can get in an online forum? Not so free anymore. You either need to already have an Oracle support contract to lookup items in Metalink (but can‘t file TARs on the XE install), or move to something much more expensive in Oracle's product lineup to get full …

What hope for MySQL 5.0 Hosting

One of the great things about MySQL is its support from web hosting companies, many people use MySQL as a backend database for their websites, there are literally hundreds of web hosting companies offering MySQL and PHP and there are dozens of PHP/MySQL books on the market.

I've written a fair amount about the new features of MySQL 5.0 and in particular Stored Procedures and Views. But there's nothing worse than people telling you to do one thing and doing another themselves. My site www.mysqldevelopment.com runs on PHP 4 and MySQL 4.0, simply because that's what my hosting company offers, they are cheap and offer a great service. I recently asked them what their plans were for upgrading accounts to MySQL 5.0, given that they are still on 4.0 I didn't hold out much hope. I was right they don't have any plans to upgrade in the short or medium term and given they didn't even know MySQL 5.0 was about to be released I wouldn't expect much …

New XAMPP for Linux with MySQL 5

The last week big news hung in air: the long awaited MySQL 5 came as a GA (Generally Available) version out. After a week beta phase (thanks to all testers) we now can announce the first "final" version of XAMPP containing the new MySQL to the public: XAMPP for Linux 1.5!

Also new in this version of XAMPP: upgraded version of Apache (2.0.55), PHP (4.4.1), phpMyAdmin (2.6.4-pl3) and OpenSSL (0.9.8a).

Appropriate versions for Windows and Mac OS X follow in the next days.

MySQL Users Group Brisbane - cake, certification, and talks

Yesterday evening was the monthly meeting of our local MySQL Users Group in Brisbane. What do we get up to at these meetings?

  • Well, there's always a few new people, so we first do an intro round. With the group growing nicely, we now try to have <30 sec intros. A good challenge for geeks!
  • I've asked Jason Hawkins, who also provides the meeting facilities, to be be the chairperson. So he keeps things on track (while still keeping things informal).
  • Next, we cover the latest MySQL related news, and have a general Q&A round. The big news was of course the production release of MySQL 5.0! To celebrate the occasion, I brought the nice five-dot-oh
