MySQL 5.0 hits 1 million downloads-Interview with Zack Urlocker

MySQL's latest release hit the 1 million download mark this week. A quick Q&A with MySQL's Zack Urlocker follows.

Why is interest in MySQL 5.0 so high?

Without question, people are tired of paying boatloads of their hard-earned cash to the big database vendors. But it's not just about low-cost. The LAMP stack gives you a lot of flexibility and scalability and reliability. It just works. Its convenient, and its fun.

The difference is that the power is no longer in the hands of the vendor--it has been transferred seemingly overnight to the consumer. It's a mature market and most people don't want or need the latest bell-and-whistle features.

I think that many Silicon Valley software companies have fallen into the same trap -- they are stuck asking themselves, "How can we make the most money?" instead of, "What do users want?". Now that users have more choice -- all vendors need to be on their …

FreeBSD 6 is lookin sexy!

Came across an article today linked to off the FreeBSD site that had some particular interest to me. I've had a lot of people tell me that Linux works better for database because of its supported filesystems. Well not for much longer!

"New performance improvements in FreeBSD 6 will take advantage of the new SMP architecture. It will also have the ability to scale to eight, 12, and 14 processors. The filesystem is now multithreaded, which, according to Long, will allow for much better performance of mail servers and database servers."

Which is awesome to hear, better SMP support and multithreaded file systems! FreeBSD community never ceases to amaze me. The article also talked about some neat features coming in the new version of OpenBSD which should make it an even better platform for BSD based router / firewall.

New Site Launch

Well the past 8 weeks of my life have had a lot of ups and downs I must say but it feels like its all finally paid off. I got to launch a new site on Friday that I'm really happy with. I got to work with some great team members and we all pulled together and created an awesome site, or at least I think so! Club SOAPnet launched on friday without a hitch. There are a couple of small things missing and should be a nice easy week of clean up. I spent a lot of time before beginning development working on the data model and looking through PEAR to see what packages will help me out. Some of the challenges were integrating with the Disney Global Registration system but that worked out in the end using curl to keep a seemless login process. It was nice not having to worry about storing sensitive data for once thanks Disney for taking that off my shoulders. I coded the whole site in about 5 weeks time …

SAP's Agassi responds: I love open source

Shai Agassi responded on his blog and in the media to my post (and others) last week regarding his comments about open source. I took his advice and went back and listened to the ZD podcast to make sure I wasn't overreacting. I was able to find all of the quotes I used from the VNUnet article and they weren't out of context enough to alter their meaning, contrary to what Agassi stated.

How can Oracle 10g Express Edition target MySQL?

As I mentioned earlier, is MySQL a target of the new Oracle 10g Express Edition. Maybe not specifically, but let’s assume it’s on the radar screen. What can Oracle do to woe MySQL users and developers?

I see distinct marketing will be required for Oracle 10g Express Edition, marketing for example to existing partners must be different to “Competitor Marketing”. While I’m sure Oracle will now be able to get benefits from Parters trying to sell their products, now being able to reduce costs to customers (at least initially). Other partners that never considered selling developed applications due to the license cost may now reconsider.

But back onto MySQL. Oracle needs to target specific information to MySQL. …
