Another approval has arrived. I will be co-presenting a tutorial at the MySQL Users Conference 2009. Partitioning in MySQL 5.1. My co-speaker is Sarah Sproehnle, a well known MySQL trainer. The topic is one of the flagship features of MySQL 5.1. |
The tutorial will cover the basics, several practical scenarios,
tips and tricks, and some sneak peeks of the latest enhancements
being developed.
Just a quick update, I was invited to speak at Sys-Con’s Cloud Computing Expo 2008 West (how’s that for a mouthful?) and accepted, planning on talking about SkyNet, S3, and our future use of cloud computing. Alas, my Inbox is so crazy, I failed to see the handful of emails the conference sent me asking me to sign a contract of some type. So I missed the deadline and they canceled my spot. (BTW, I can’t recall a conference ever asking me to sign something to speak, but this one does and I was full of FAIL.)
So, I’m sorry, despite being listed on the program, I’m *not* speaking there this week. It was my bad – I just missed the emails (as I miss so many emails these days). But still, a phone call from them wouldn’t have hurt, would it?

I’ve had one session accepted at the 2008 MySQL Conference & Expo (which is a good thing since I only submitted one session for nomination).
This year’s session is titled How to be Normal, a Guide for Developers. I decided to return to my old Normalization talk, but lean more towards the practical than the theoretical this year and work on common scenarios faced by developers rather than walk a person through the normal forms like I have previously done.

I’m back from LinuxWorld. Slides from my talk (well, similar slides, I modified them slightly) are available.
I have to say, I haven’t loved going to LinuxWorld for the past 2 or 3 times, but today was the first time I was able to tell why. At first, I thought it was the presence of all the large vendors (IBM, Novell, CA, Intel). Actually, those booths are more funny than annoying. (See the CA dancing penguin from January, 2004.)
It’s actually the hardware/IT nature of the show. I’m a software guy. I’m not interested in your network monitoring applications or your license deployment systems. I guess they’re necessary in large IT setups, but I don’t want to hear people screaming at me about them over their loudspeakers.
Still, it’s good to see my friends …
