What do we optimize with mk-query-digest ?

When we're looking at mk-query-digest report we typically look at the Queries causing the most impact (sum of the query execution times) as well as queries having some longest samples. Why are we looking at these ?

Queries with highest Impact are important because looking at these queries and optimizing them typically helps to improve system capacity, which in the end often improves response time of the system for variety of queries. Also queries causing highest impact often correspond to either frequent or slowest transactions in the system which makes these queries important to look at.

Slowest Queries correspond to bad response times. If there is 30 sec query this means somebody had to wait for 30 seconds which is typically not acceptable for interactive queries. It is best to look at 95 percentile "time" rather than slowest time for the queries as there are often exceptionally …

Save MySQL: Getting Some Facts Straight

I’d like to clear up some misconceptions that have appeared in comments on various blogs, social bookmarking, and other fora in response to Monty’s recent call for action. Many of these have been repeated ad infinitum and it’s time to set the record straight.

1). Monty sold MySQL to Sun.

Monty founded MySQL Ab along with David Axmark. True. He and David then decided they’d like to pay their bills, and so to generate revenue, they decided to seek outside investors. As neither of them is highly experienced with such matters, they hired Mårten Mickos, who became CEO of …

Great Job, MySQL Engineering!

Just a quick note to congratulate MySQL engineering on their next milestone release, MySQL 5.5. There seem to be some excellent new features, some of which have been hotly requested for quite some time:

  • Support for SIGNAL/RESIGNAL — the ANSI/ISO method of throwing errors inside SQL procedures
  • Support for partitioning by RANGE COLUMNS and LIST COLUMNS
  • Support for semi-synchronous replication, which ensures that the master waits until at least one slave has committed a transaction

On the subject of SIGNAL/RESIGNAL, Roland Bouman has, as usual, an excellent and informative article on the subject. My personal opinion on SIGNAL/RESIGNAL is that it is one of the most …

The fading of Query Cache limitations

There is no question about the MySQL Query Cache greatness.  The MySQL Query Cache feature started his way with some limitations.  However, in time, there were a lot of improvements (fixing) for those limitations. One should test his MySQL version with the Query Cache limitations before using it. Here are some improved limitations I found […]

The Oracle EU statement on MySQL – What’s missing

Many providers embedd MySQL with their commercial products including Adobe, Macfee, Nokia, Symantec and ScienceLogic just to name a few. In addition most commercial third party storage engines have for years been forced to provided very customized versions of MySQL due to limitations in the storage engine API. These situations require a license agreement necessary with the trademark holder of MySQL. The Oracle Corporation EU Statement released on December 14, 2009 has carefully worded in the statement about these OEM licenses and storage engine providers there will be no changes for 5 years.

One specific detail is missing, what happens then?

As an individual that uses, recommends, promotes and advises clients especially on various storage engine …
