Speaking in March 2016

There are a few upcoming speaking gigs this March 2016:

Two talks in London and one keynote in Singapore, while I will also moderate the database track on the last day of the conference as well. I’ve never been to flossUK before, but the schedule looks very interesting and I’m looking forward to it. FOSSASIA is an event I’ve been going to regularly since it was held in varying places (Vietnam, Cambodia, before finally settling down in Singapore) so this is an always exciting time.

Would happily meet you to talk shop, feel free to drop me an email: colin[at]mariadb.com.

SCALE14x trip report

SCALE14x was held at Pasadena, Los Angeles this year from January 21-24 2016. I think its important to note that the venue changed from the Hilton LAX — this is a much bigger space, as the event is much bigger, and you’ll also notice that the expo hall has grown tremendously.

I had a talk in the MySQL track, and that was just one of over 180 talks. There were over 3,600 people attending, and it showed by the number of people coming by the MariaDB Corporation booth. I spent sometime there with Rod Allen, Max Mether, and Kurt Pastore, and the qualified leads we received were pretty high. Of course it didn’t hurt that we were also giving away a Sphero BB-8 Droid.

The …

Lightning talks at Percona Live Data Performance Conference

The main schedule for the Percona Live Data Performance Conference is available. Almost everything has been defined. There are tutorials and plenty of sessions waiting for conference attendees.

One thing that is still undefined is the session of lightning talks. The …

SCALE14x – lots of MySQL content there

One of my favourite events run by a grassroots organisation is SCALE, and they are now doing their 14th edition, SCALE14x. If you’re into opensource software as well as all things open, this is the place to be from January 21-24 2016. It is at a new location in Pasadena (so not quite next to LAX as it was previously), but this is due to growth — so kudos to the team.

From MariaDB Corporation you get to see Max Mether (Scaling MySQL & MariaDB – I’m extremely interested in seeing what he has to say and will likely blog the session) and me (The MySQL Server Ecosystem in …

Percona Live Data Performance Conference 2016 - CFP and Community voting

The call for participation for Percona Live Data Performance Conference 2016 is still open. Deadline for submission is November 29th.

There are two immediately noticeable novelties in this edition:

  • The name change. Not "MySQL & Expo" but "Data Performance Conference." It makes the conference open to a broader set of topics.
  • The community voting. Proposals can get evaluated by the community before the review committee takes decisions.

I think it's a good choice. Other conferences adopt the same method. The attendees choose what they want to see and hear. In this case, it's mixed method, where the community voting is used as an indication for the review committee, which, by my understanding, has the final say.

Vote for my proposals!

Below are my proposals. Clicking on the links below …

Percona Live Europe 2015

Well, it was ended a week ago, but I had too many errands to run, so I couldn’t post anything about it.

It was really great, again. This was the third time I attended (2013 London, 2015 Santa Clara) so now I have met with a lot of familiar people – it is true that MySQL has a great community. The chosen city was great, Amsterdam is one of the coolest places of Europe, the hotel was neat, and the programs were also astounding.

The conference sessions were great too, I really enjoyed, them all, and because they are running on 8 thread parallel it is not that bad that there are some recurring sessions; if you missed one in spring you can watch it on autumn.

So, everything was comfy and neat. I hope I’ll attend on the next one too …

There were a few topics where I plan to dig deeper in the next weeks

  • ProxySQL because HAProxy is a good choice, but it is only speaks TCP and HTTP but not …

Personal Summary of the Percona Live Amsterdam 2015 Conference

Last week, 21-23 September, it took place the European MySQL Conference, or “Data performance Conference” as this year’s subtitle was “MySQL. NoSQL. Data in the cloud.”. This year, it changed its location from London to Amsterdam and, as most people I talked to agreed, the change was for good. As every year, Percona was the company organizing it, but it had the participation of all the major players in the open source MySQL/MongoDB/Cloud data world. Special mention goes to Booking.com, which had more …
