I vote for Planet MySQL moderation
+4 Vote Up -7Vote Down

How this happens or who does it is obviously a larger and more complex conversation however it is better then involving innocent animals.

How is it that trivial $#*! gets voted and has a string of comments I can not explain, however Planet MySQL should have practical MySQL related content. I would vote for the front page and RSS feed to show only moderated content, and content that did not pass the cut (and there is a lot of this) can be available on a less important page if necessary.

Rather then complaining like many open source communities, let us propose a way to improve the system we use.

OpenSQL Camp Europe: Time to cast your votes!

If you wonder why there hasn't been an update from me for quite a while — I just returned from two months of paternal leave, in which I actually managed to stay away from the PC most of the time. In the meanwhile, I've officially become an Oracle employee and there is a lot of administrative things to take care of... But it feels good to be back!

During my absence, Giuseppe and Felix kicked off the Call for Papers for this year's …

Planet MySQL: What are you going to do with voting data?
+3 Vote Up -4Vote Down

I'm a fan of voting on planet mysql posts - but I've also realized that since I'm logged in, it allows someone to keep a pretty valuable silo of information on what interests me. If I vote up a Kickfire or Infobright post, should I expect a sales call to follow?

There's nothing in the FAQ about what happens with the data.

Beefing up community feeds

If you weren't paying attention, you may have missed the latest news in Planet MySQL. A few months ago, the site has added the ability of voting for posts (in addition to searching and tagging, which make it much more useful than it was before).
However, if you, like many, read Planet MySQL using a feed reader, the recent benefits are not easily usable.
To allow everyone to vote on the posts they like, even from a feed reader, …

OpenSQLCamp democracy

We have seen this before. Actually, we got the idea from Drupal, where talk proposals are public, and the most voted ones get in the schedule. Nonetheless, it's a pleasure to see that a transparent voting system is accepted and used.

The OpenSQLCamp 2009 European edition, is under scrutiny. There are 27 …

OpenSQL Camp 2009: CfP has ended, vote for your favourites until July 26th!

The Call for Papers for the OpenSQL Camp 2009 (European Edition) has ended yesterday — we received 27 excellent session proposals from various Open Source Database projects. I would like to say a big "Thank You" to everyone who submitted a talk! In the beginning I was a bit concerned that the conference would become too …

The MySQL Librarian is here!

I have had a wish for a few years. I wanted to find a way to put together the valuable information that the community produces about MySQL, a way that would let me easily find the interesting content that I may have missed when on vacation, or when busy with a conference, a company meeting, or a long stream of coding.

That wish started to take shape last year, when I was traveling with Dups during the East Coast tour. I drove, he took notes. He drove, I took more notes. During meals and walking breaks we discussed and refined the idea. When we went back home, a plan was ready. Dups …

On the Merits of Voting
Employee +1 Vote Up -0Vote Down

Just before the MySQL User Conference, Dups implemented a small little feature for Planet MySQL: “voting”. We wanted to see what a voting system might mean to you, our PlanetMySQL readers.

The question is now how to improve the voting mechanism to make it more useful. The goal is for everyone to see what you and your peers think are the best PlanetMySQL entries over a given week.

Here are some of the options:

1. Open up voting to everyone regardless of whether they are logged in or not. Currently you can only …
