Virtualization and MySQL

So, the article at:

http://mysql-dba-journey.blogspot.com/2007/11/mysql-and-vmware.html says:

Don’t get seduced to the dark side unless you understand all the issues.

And that’s wonderful and all, but….what are all the issues? What are some of the issues? Is it related more to VMware, or more to MySQL, or more to MySQL on VMware? Is it something like “VMware isn’t stable” or more like “load testing on vmware isn’t always going to work because you won’t have full resources”?

Many people talk about using virtualization for development and testing….but if you develop and test on a virtual machine and then put it on a physical machine for production, isn’t that basically having differing environments for dev/testing and production, which is usually seen as bad? If a line of code …

From Developing to Data-basing and back

So first of, I'd like to say thank you to David Edwards who wrote Log Buffer #69: a Carnival of the Vanities for DBAs - for writing about my blog!

It really amazes me how vital blogs are to my day to day life and work. Most of the blogs I read are by people who work in some area of computers and they give you a rare look at their life and how they solved problems in their field.
Its really first hand- first class information that benefits me immensely.

And now for my blog...

Most database users are not interested in your tables

Its true, they really don?t care. In fact, most developers have to "map" your tables to their application, meaning tell the program which table to look, which field to look for and if need be, convert it or manipulate it in some way.

Cool Stack 1.2 Released

Finally, it's here. We missed our October 31 deadline, but hopefully that won't matter when you see the contents of the release.

Short summary of changes in the 1.2 release.

You can download the new packages from the Sun Download Center.

Some caveats to be aware of :

  • These packages will over-write Cool Stack 1.1 packages that you may already have installed. All packages continue to install in /opt/coolstack but some of the package names have been changed. Thus, pkgadd(1M) will not know that the new CSKapache2 package will install in /opt/coolstack/apache2 and over-write the contents from a previous Cool Stack 1.1 installation of CSKamp. So, please do save your current installation. A detailed …

Ohloh top 10

People sometimes ask me if I still do a lot of development.

Well, Ohloh keeps track of that these days and it seems that between September and November 2007 I was the 7th most active contributor:

Ohloh tracks 90655 developers in 8985 projects including Firefox, Apache HTTP server, Subversion, MySQL, PHP, Open Office, the Linux kernel, Ubuntu and many more.  As such, I’m kinda proud of that 7th spot.

If version 3 of Pentaho Data Integration has any bugs left when it launches, it won’t be because I was having a vacation

Until next time,

Matt

How to Select Unique Records from a table that does not have a Unique Index

Many times DBAs work with data sets that are not the most optimal (in their opinion), and I recently had the pleasure of working with a table that did not have a unique identifier. And I needed to get unique results from this table, as I would need to do this query in different forms in the future, without selecting records from the past.Caveat: I could not alter the table structure yet; I

Log Buffer #69: a Carnival of the Vanities for DBAs

Welcome to the 69th edition of Log Buffer, the weekly review of database blogs. We start this edition with an item about getting started: K. Brian Kelley’s first installment of Becoming a DBA on Databases, Infrastructure, and Security. It purposes to answer the question, what does it take to become a DBA? “(The) definition of [...]
