Tragedy strikes home. This my Eulogy.

This sucks. I don't know how else to put it. My friend Wyatt Ammon is no more. Gone. He left in July, to do some good for the world. He joined the PEACE Corps. So, today I get a call, saying Wyatt Ammon is no more. It's strange, I think he was two years younger than me. One of the nicest guys I ever met, a kindred spirit. He tried very hard to beat me at tennis, we had agreed to play again in two years, once he was back from Zambia. When he left, I figured it was just a temporary thing, we all thought, we'd see him again in two years. But, I guess we won't. This blog belongs to one of his friends. I guess it's good that atleast he didn't die a horrible tortured death, nor did he suffer in bed for a long time, that should be some consolation I guess. But.. Wyatt.. is gone.. no more beers after tennis, no more talks about what life …

New Site Launch

Well the past 8 weeks of my life have had a lot of ups and downs I must say but it feels like its all finally paid off. I got to launch a new site on Friday that I'm really happy with. I got to work with some great team members and we all pulled together and created an awesome site, or at least I think so! Club SOAPnet launched on friday without a hitch. There are a couple of small things missing and should be a nice easy week of clean up. I spent a lot of time before beginning development working on the data model and looking through PEAR to see what packages will help me out. Some of the challenges were integrating with the Disney Global Registration system but that worked out in the end using curl to keep a seemless login process. It was nice not having to worry about storing sensitive data for once thanks Disney for taking that off my shoulders. I coded the whole site in about 5 weeks time …

International PHP Conference 2005: it's over

Yesterday, the International PHP Conference 2005 closed its doors. So far, it was very nice to see all the people again and have some good time. Luckily, there was enough free beer at the VIP Reception and the PHP Lounge. :-) This year, we introduced some new events:

The Management Day: you know, attendees usually are not only the smaller or mid-sized companies. Mostly, companies like Deutsche Telekom, Siemens and other companies send 3-10 people from their department to this Conference to catch up with the latest hot development in the PHP scene. This year, we tried to provide a separate day fully dedicated to the topic "PHP in the Enterprise". I think we pretty much succeeded. We invited companies like T-Online (a subsidiary company of Deutsche Telekom), HypoVereinsbank (one of …

Checking password strength using md5.rednoize.com and AJAX

With some inspiration from Ben Ramsey i created a little demo for using my md5 database during the signup process on a website.

This example demonstrates the use of the MD5 database at http://md5.rednoize.com and AJAX to check password strength during signup on a website. After supplying a username and a password, a md5 hash of the password is generated using Paul Johnston's md5 javascript library.

The hash of the password (not the password itself) is then sent to http://md5.rednoize.com. If the website returns a result for the given password (hence the hash password combination is stored in the md5 database) it can be regarded as …
