This week in my posts on Facebook I paid attention mostly to bugs in MySQL 5.6.x, as I really expected to see 5.6 GA announcement soon. Maybe some of the bugs were the reason to postpone release a bit. Anyway, let's start with serious bug reports and some trends I've noted.

I've noted that some of "Verified" bug reports somehow silently miss comments about their status in MySQL 5.6. Check Bug #68137, for example. It is repeatable on 5.5.31 (yet to be released, but it means 5.5.30 is cloned off and will be released soon) and 5.7.1. But 5.6.x is not mentioned anywhere. Does it mean 5.6.x is not affected? Learned a few things during my trip to the Philippines this time. Another country that amazes me. For the first time in history, Philippines attracted more foreign direct investments (FDI) than Malaysia, in 2010 (see: Malaysia’s FDI plunge).

There are a lot of people here using prepaid phones as opposed to postpaid phones. This is because the requirements of getting a postpaid account is quite tough (you need bank documents, etc. before they give you an account).

Many people carry more than one phone (or have more than one SIM). Smartphones face an uphill battle – they cost too much and there is generally no operator subsidy because everyone prefers prepaid accounts. It makes economic sense to have more than one SIM,

For very personal reasons that don’t belong in this article, I decided a few weeks ago that it’s time for me to move on. The year and a half that I worked for Pythian have been a wonderful experience, and this is article is my tribute to this great company.

Being able to work side by side with two MySQL experts like Sheeri Cabral and Augusto Bott has been a great experience. I have learned a lot, not only about MySQL, but also about what a great DBA should be like. Both of them are recognized MySQL Community members and regular speakers at the MySQL Users Conference and other events. Sheeri has been named MySQL Community Member of the Year twice in a row. Both are a guarantee of excellent service.

Over the weekend I took some notes from a presentation and did some research from various sources. The result was a blog post about Internet trends that I posted on my personal blog. There are some very interesting statistics about Internet usage and social networking. Also, Facebook fans will find some interesting facts as well.
