Seeking volunteers for Percona documentation
+5 Vote Up -2Vote Down

Percona wants to upgrade our documentation to improve its readability
and to make it more useful for you, our clients and partners. We are
so busy developing software and handling your needs that we have
trouble finishing all the documentation! We think you can help.

Helping us will give you a chance to interact closely with lead Perona
developers and learn more about Percona's products as well as our
development process.

Tasks include talking to developers, writing text, and interacting
with an editor. (Andy Oram, our O'Reilly editor on the book High
Performance MySQL, will take on the volunteer role.) You should have
some understanding of MySQL and Percona's extensions, and of way
XtraDB and XtraBackup work.

Introducing tpce-like workload for MySQL
+5 Vote Up -1Vote Down

We have been using tpcc-mysql benchmark for long time, and there many results published in our blog, but that's just single workload. That's why we are looking into different benchmarks, and one
of them is TPCE. Yasufumi made some efforts to make TPCE working with MySQL, and we are making it available for public consideration.

You can download it from our Lauchpad Percona-tools project, it's
bzr branch lp:~percona-dev/perconatools/tpcemysql

Using this package you should agree with TPC-E License Agreement,
which in human words is:

  • You can't name results as "TPC Benchmark Results"
  • You can't compare results with results published on

Percona is hiring a consultant
+1 Vote Up -14Vote Down

We're hiring. We are looking for the following qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of MySQL. Not just "certified" -- years of production experience with it. You need to know server internals, for example. You need to be able to do anything from optimizing difficult queries to moving high-volume services between data centers without interruption.
  • Expert knowledge of InnoDB. You should understand its inner workings well enough to answer questions about its internals from memory, such as "how does the insert buffer work?" or "how does MVCC work on secondary indexes?" You should also know why it has trouble on some workloads and how to solve that.
  • Expert knowledge of Linux systems administration. You need to know how to solve issues with filesystems, hardware, and networking. You need to be able to use tools such as gdb, strace, tcpdump, etc to

His previous job was at Hydra, an advertising network, where he was sole DBA and half of the systems and network engineering team. Deva likes to automate: he wrote the mycat MySQL administration tools, and he knows how to administer lots of servers simultaneously. He is active in open-source software development, and very excited about Drizzle.

    5.0.83-build17 Percona binaries
    +2 Vote Up -0Vote Down

    Dear Community,

The build 17 of MySQL with Percona patches is available.

    New features in the release:

    • MySQL-5.0.83 is taken as the basis
    • The new patch innodb_use_sys_malloc.patch is added
    • The new patch innodb_split_buf_pool_mutex.patch is added
    • This patch splits the single global InnoDB buffer pool mutex into several mutexes for different purposes. This reduces mutex contention. It may help if you suffer performance loss when the working set does not fit in memory. You can detect buffer pool mutex contention by examining the output of SHOW INNODB STATUS and looking at the first section, SEMAPHORES.

    • Google's style IO - innodb_io_patches.patch

    Maatkit Now Supports Memcached
    +3 Vote Up -0Vote Down

Have you ever wondered how optimized your Memcached installation is? There is a common misconception that one doesn't have to think too deeply about Memcached performance, but that is not true. If your setup is inefficient, you could:

    • Burn Memory
    • Waste Network Round-Trips
    • Store Keys That Never Get Retrieved
    • Have a Low Cache Hit Ratio (i.e. query MySQL too much)
    • Suffer a fate too horrible to contemplate.

Percona does a lot of consulting around Memcached, so we try to take a quantitative, scientific approach to measuring memcached performance, just like everything else we do.

memcached is basically a key-value in-memory database, so it works well to analyze its traffic with Maatkit's
