The sessions for this year’s MySQL Connect conference have now been scheduled – as you can see below, my 2 MySQL Cluster sessions will be on Saturday 21st September at 11:30 and 14:30 (Pacific).

I registered yesterday for Oracle OpenWorld 2013, and I’ll look forward to seeing friends there. Having worked in the Oracle 12c beta for a year, I’ll be interested in the presentations. Also, hearing more about Java 7 at JavaOne. On the downside, I’m missing MySQL Connect this year.

Cloud computing offers many possibilities, and container and pluggable databases are a great solution. We’ve two new acronyms with the Oracle 12c release. A containerized database is a CDB, and a pluggable database is a PDB. I’m looking forward to seeing more about the provisioning of PDBs during the conference. The Call for Papers for MySQL Connect 2013 will close this Friday.  This is the premier Oracle-sponsored MySQL conference, and a great opportunity for community users and customers alike to connect with Oracle staff from engineering, support, consulting and other organizations, as well as community partners and peers.  Maybe you’d like to talk about your experiences integrating one of the new MySQL 5.6 features.  Or maybe you’d like to share best practices you’ve developed for integrating with Hadoop.  Perhaps you’ve extended MySQL and want to tell the community about it.  Take advantage of this opportunity and submit your proposal this week!

It's the end of the year and, before the world ends ;-) , I feel the pressure to follow up on last year's article "2011, a great year for MySQL in Review". I'll adopt a similar format and mention things in context, covering products, marketing, momentum, etc. at a high level. I may have missed something and I hope my colleagues will contribute to the list.

I really do think it's been the best year for MySQL so far... well, at least since when I signed my contract with MySQL AB at the end of 2007. We're just at the beginning of our journey and I wish to the MySQL family, to our community and ecosystem an even better 2013!

Solving the Challenges of Big Databases with MySQL

When you’re using MySQL for big data (more than ten times as large as main memory), these challenges often arise: loading data fast; maintaining indexes under insertions deletions, and updates; adding and removing columns online; adding indexes online; preventing slave lag; and compressing data effectively.

This session shows why some of these challenges are difficult to solve with storage engines based on B-trees, how Fractal Tree® data structures work, and why they can help solve these problems. Tokutek sells a transaction-safe Fractal Tree storage engine for MySQL, but the presentation is primarily about the underlying technology. The MySQL Connect conference call for papers is closed and the response was amazing. Now the problem is that we have a few hundred great session and only two days and nights to get everything presented. The submissions range from the big companies to private individuals and old, familiar faces in the MySQL Community to some new folks with top notch material.

Database as a service, cloud computing, tuning, InnoDB secrests, cluster implementation, Oracle/MySQL data transfers, replication tricks, query enhancement, big data, stored routines, J2ee, server refactoring, backups, NoSQL/SQL, and other subjects are covered — and those were just the first few submissions!
