“HBase and Hadoop are the only technologies proven to scale to dozens of petabytes on commodity servers, currently being used by companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Adobe and Salesforce.com.”–Monte Zweben.

Is it possible to turn Hadoop into a RDBMS? On this topic, I have interviewed Monte Zweben, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Splice Machine.

Accessing Fabric HA Groups from Java
Employee +1 Vote Up -0Vote Down

It's been almost a year now since the initial release of MySQL Fabric. It is maturing and reached a GA state earlier this year as part of MySQL Utilities 1.4. Developers and architects are evaluating it for their applications, learning the capabilities of the system, and providing feedback for future features and usability enhancements. Connector/J has supported Fabric from the very beginning and continues to support the latest features. This blog post is an introductory level guide to using Fabric for high-availability from Java applications. Sharding features and Java APIs will be covered in a later post. The commands shown and feature descriptions are …

Oracle 12c VARCHAR2?
+0 Vote Up -1Vote Down

The Oracle Database 12c documentation says you can set the maximum size of a VARCHAR2 to 32,767 bytes. That’s true except when you’re trying to map a large Java string to a VARCHAR2. It fails when the physical size of the Java string is greater than 4,000 bytes with an ORA-01002 or fetch out of sequence error.

SELECT read_text_file('C:\Data\loader\Hobbit1.txt')

Connector/J 5.1.30 is out with Fabric support
Employee +0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

Today marks the release of several exciting pieces of software from Oracle. In addition to MySQL server 5.7.4 DMR, MySQL Fabric is out as a release candidate 1.4.2 and Connector/J 5.1.30 has full support. MySQL Fabric is a new way to implement high-availability and scale-out with MySQL server. It provides a way to group sets of servers into high-availability groups with automatic replication configuration. If scale-out is important, sharding can be defined in terms of these high-availability groups.

To use Connector/J with Fabric, you only need to add the jar to your classpath. If you are still using Java 5, you will need to manually load the …

MySQL Connectors, a Real Plus for Developers
Employee_Team +2 Vote Up -0Vote Down

MySQL Connectors provide connectivity to the MySQL server for client programs. APIs provide low-level access to the MySQL protocol and MySQL resources. Both Connectors and the APIs enable you to connect and execute MySQL statements from another language or environment. Oracle provides a number of these, enabling developers to build database applications in the language of their choice. Among those developed by Oracle are drivers for JDBC and ODBC. Any system that works with JDBC or ODBC can use MySQL. And you can find many more, including drivers for PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl and even …

Mac OS X: The Love Affair Is Over
+1 Vote Up -0Vote Down

Like a lot of developers I started using a MacBook Pro around the time of Tiger.  I instantly loved it:  simple, fast, and virtually no system administration overhead. The genius of OS X was that it never got in the way. You opened the box, pulled out the machine, and got to work. It had a great user interface, excellent  development tools (Eclipse in my case) and the command utilities like ssh, rsync, and bash worked seamlessly with Linux systems.

Well, that was then and this is now. Starting with Lion I began to spend an increasing amount of time fighting OS X instead of getting work done. I'm now using Mavericks and have …
