MySQL conference schedule

I am one of the crazy individuals(*) that will be speaking at both the regular O’Reilly MySQL Conference and the IOUG Collaborate conference both being held in the second week of April. My 4 presentations are:

See you at Collaborate 2011

I’ll be speaking at IOUG’s Collaborate conference in Florida the week of April 10-14. My session is called MySQL Performance Basics. For those who know MySQL, this won’t be exciting, but if you’re new to it, I hope it will be a good orientation to what you should focus on and ignore.

Sheeri Cabral posted a good round-up of the MySQL talks at Collaborate on the PalominoDB blog.

No Hotsos? Go to the MySQL Conference instead.

I wish I could be at the Hotsos Symposium. I would keep my mouth very tightly closed and my ears wide open, and try to learn from people who are completely out of my league about performance analysis topics I won’t grok for another decade (if I’m lucky). But I just can’t cram in that much travel.

If you’re like me, why don’t you go to the O’Reilly MySQL Conference instead? I’ll be trying my feeble best to bring some of the Oracle performance scientist’s mentality to this event, with presentations such as my Forecasting MySQL Performance and Scalability session. And a lot of smart people will be there from many …

MySQL conference Ignite call for proposals

The call for papers for the MySQL conference’s Ignite sessions is open. These are a lot of fun: 5 minutes, 20 slides, period. Last year I spoke way too fast — if I do it again this year, I’ll try not to cram so much into so little time. Either that, or I’ll deliberately talk like Busta Rhymes.

OurSQL Episode 32: Backup tools you already have [Backup series #2]

Show notes:

Previous backup series podcast:
Backup glossary [Backup series #1]

Feedback:
In the backup glossary we asked if anyone knew how to get logical data out of physical InnoDB files. Mike Hamrick of Blue Gecko wrote in to say that Percona's InnoDB recovery tool helps to do just that. He writes:

"The 'page_parser' tool will read ibdata files or individual .ibd files and turn them into a series of 16k page files suitable for processing with a tool called 'constraints_parser' which spits out a number of tab separated lines of table data suitable for a LOAD DATA INFILE.

MySQL & Friends Meetup @ FOSDEM

Kris Buytaert organized a MySQL Meetup at FOSDEM last year, and because of the success we’ll be doing it again this year, in the same restaurant: Sogno d’Italia.

Everybody is invited to come to the dinner. Just register on http://mysqlandfriendsfosdem2011.eventbrite.com/ so we have an idea how many reservations we should make. The maximum capacity is about 40 people.

We’ll plan to meet at 19:00 on Saturday, under the big tree in front of the AW building. Then we’ll walk to the restaurant, which is about 5 minutes walking distance.

My sessions at the O’Reilly MySQL Conference 2011

I’ll be presenting several sessions at the O’Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo 2011, which is April 11-14 in Santa Clara, California. I recommend this conference to anyone interested in open-source databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, CouchDB, MongoDB, and others. There is very good coverage of a diverse list of open-source databases.

My sessions are as follows:

IOUG’s MySQL Council

I’m super excited to point all of our readers to the IOUG press release announcing the formation of the MySQL Council.

January 13, 2011 – The Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG), a community of more than 20,000 international database and technology professionals representing large, medium and small businesses, government agencies and educational institutions, today announced the formation of the MySQL Council..

I additionally have the privilege of leading this council in it’s first year and helping the MySQL community engage with the IOUG putting to use the relationship and history that the IOUG has with Oracle to help MySQL maintain and grow our community.

I’m looking forward to the next meeting of the MySQL Council where we will be ratifying the charter document defining the council’s goals.  My favorite lines from the …
