At OSCON, if you’re into the MySQL world, the day to be paying attention to BoFs is clearly Wednesday, 24 July 2013. We have a MariaDB BoF at D136 at 8pm-9pm, but before that you might be at the MySQL BoF in the same room, or you might be in Peter Zaitsev’s BoF on MySQL, NoSQL, Big Data – Better Together in E141. So figure out how to split yourself at 7-8pm, and once you’re done, come from 8-9pm at D136 on Wednesday and join the MariaDB crew at OSCON!

We’ll also be at the SkySQL booth, so come by Booth 815 and get some free t-shirts, stickers, or support the MariaDB community by being a foundation donor.

It seems there’s lot of activity in Barcelona, Spain in the coming weeks. Lenz Grimmer talks about speaking at LinuxCon Europe (Nov 5-9), where the conference really runs from Nov 5-7. I’m happy to be speaking about MariaDB on the 5th. Monty Program & SkySQL are joint-booth-sponsors of this event, so expect there to be a presence for Q&A at the booths.

It has been a long time since I’ve been to Manila, so we’re happy to have a meetup group there with the hopes of turning it regular. If you’re in the Makati area of metro Manila on Tuesday, September 11 2012 at 7pm, feel free to come to the first MariaDB/MySQL Meetup in Manila. RSVP and I hope to see you next Tuesday.

    Meet us at OSCON

Things are definitely a little quieter here in MariaDB land as many people embark on summer vacations to rest and recharge. However we will be at OSCON 2012. We have a booth in the non-profit/projects pavilion, amazing amounts of schwag, and the famous black vodka that Monty always brings with him. We plan to have a BoF on Thursday evening (come to D135 at 8pm), and we will be at the MySQL BoF on Wednesday evening as well, just for good measure.

Come say hi. Come tell us how you’re using MariaDB. Come tell us what you want from MariaDB. Come tell us why you switched. Or what we can do to make you switch. It should be all round fun.

    See you next week!

On Friday last week, after the intensive days of the conference, Ars Technica wrote and published a nice article about MariaDB including many of the messages we had been delivering during the conference, http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2012/04/mysql-founders-latest-mariadb-release-takes-enterprise-features-open-source.ars.

Events this week: Percona Live London, LinuxCon Europe

A big week for conferences in Europe this week. We’re starting it off at Percona Live London 2011 (see previous post), with both Sergei Golubchik and Colin Charles presenting talks on Tuesday 25 October 2011.

Right after, we’re headed to LinuxCon Europe, where Colin Charles will discuss The MySQL Diaspora and how there exists much choice for people today (it is not just stock MySQL one can use nowadays).

Monty Program is sponsoring both Percona Live London as well as LinuxCon Europe. We’ll be having a booth at LinuxCon Europe, probably right next to our friends SkySQL, as we did at LinuxCon North America (Vancouver).

Monty Program will be at Percona Live London

Its good to announce that Monty Program will have a presence at Percona Live London (October 24 & 25 2011), and we’re very excited about it. There will be two talks (no tutorials this time around):

  • Sergei Golubchik will present on Pluggable Authentication in MySQL and MariaDB. I’ve seen Serg give tutorials to this effect, so expect a lot within half an hour!
  • Colin Charles will present on Why MariaDB? which focuses on what new features are available today in MariaDB and how they benefit users.
  • Will we see you there? Registrations are still open and we would love to talk to you then.

The MariaDB Project is at OSCON 2011. We’ve got a booth, and we plan to also have a BoF session: Wednesday 27 July 2011 at room E142 at 8pm.

There will as usual be lots of black vodka (there was some yesterday at the MySQL BoF as well), and we’re going to talk about and celebrate the release of MariaDB 5.3.0 beta.

Come drop by the booth… we clearly have an interesting booth giveaway. And feel free to say hi to Kurt von Finck, Michael “Monty” Widenius, or Colin Charles who will be present, walking around, etc. Spot them in a MariaDB t-shirt of course!

Monty Program and SkySQL have decided to be good corporate citizens to the Linux Foundation and have decided to sponsor a few of their LinuxCon events. We will be at LinuxCon Japan, happening June 1-3 2011 in Yokohama, Japan.

It’s my first LinuxCon, so if anyone has tips, please don’t hesitate to leave them in the comments. Cheers!

SkySQL Roadshows – Seoul & Tokyo
    +2 Vote Up -1Vote Down

A lot is happening in the world of MySQL lately. If you’re in Asia, SkySQL has been organising roadshows. On May 18, there was a captive audience in Singapore, listening to David Axmark (advisor to SkySQL, co-founder of MySQL Ab), Daniel Saito (SkySQL), and Colin Charles (Monty Program). On May 20, there was a huge audience in Manila, and I was totally bummed to have missed out on it.

I’m told there’s going to be an awesome audience tomorrow, May 27, in Seoul, South Korea. Lotte Hotel will be abuzz with all things SkySQL, Monty Program, and MariaDB, and it will feature Kaj Arno and Daniel Saito from SkySQL, and Colin Charles from Monty Program.

May 30 brings upon the SkySQL Roadshow in Tokyo, hosted at the Yurakucho International Forum.

Newsletters from the MariaDB dev meeting in Lisbon

Every morning before any of the meetings get started I print out a small one page newsletter which contains (among other things) the program for the day. Rather than keep them private, Colin suggested I post them here. I call the newsletter the “MariaDB Programador de Journal” which (I think) translates to “MariaDB Programmer’s Journal” in Portuguese.

    Kajona is running with MariaDB

Based on small talk with Stefan Idler and Jakob Schröter at OpenRheinRuhr2010, Kajona CMS now officially works with MariaDB. They tested MariaDB and verified that it was a drop-in-replacement for MySQL without any modifications needed on their side. We are of course happy to hear about all real-life success stories!

You can find more about Kajona here.

If your project or product also supports MariaDB, then please tell us about it! You can find our growing list of supported software on our Knowledgebase.

MariaDB will be at Open Database Camp Sardinia 2011
    +6 Vote Up -0Vote Down

Monty Program Ab has signed up to be a sponsor at the Open Database Camp Sardinia 2011, and has donated the logo placement to the MariaDB project.

As a company we definitely plan to have a few employees attend and speak about all the things we’ve been working on in MariaDB. Will you be there? Go fill out the attendee list.

We’re all very excited at the first Open Database Camp (with a similar OpenSQLCamp format) and are especially excited for it being hosted in the beautiful island of Sardinia. See you there!

Speaking at the MySQL User Conference 2011

New Year is coming! And it brings us a new MySQL User Conference! As always, me and my colleagues will be attending — we have great talks to offer:

    • Monty is giving a keynote State of MariaDB. Just like the last year, Monty will tell you how we are doing, what we have spent the last year on, what we are working on now.
    • Colin presents A Beginner’s Guide to MariaDB talk. If you have heard of MariaDB, but don’t quite know what it is and why you should care — go and attend his talk.

    OpenSQLCamp Boston 2010
    +0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

OpenSQLCamp Boston 2010 happens 16-17 October 2010, at MIT in Boston (there is an evening social session on Friday the 15th as well). Its organised by MySQL community aficionado Sheeri Cabral, and by looking at the schedule and sponsors, it is going to be one of the most diverse OpenSQLCamp’s by far.

Monty Program is a sponsor, and I (Colin) will be participating on behalf of Monty Program to bring some information about what’s new from the Istanbul company meeting. More of the company certainly wanted to be at the event, but most are going to be spending some quality vacation time in Istanbul, since our all company meeting only ends on the 12th.

If you have not already registered to attend, what’s keeping you? Its free to attend, and Sheeri tells me that there’s some very cool schwag available for grabs.

Monty to speak at Open Source Bridge 2010
    +1 Vote Up -1Vote Down

Open Source Bridge dubs itself as the conference for open source citizens. It happens June 1-4 2010, in beautiful Portland, Oregon. The young event (it celebrates its second birthday this year), seems to already have a great database track.

From Monty Program Ab, we have Monty himself leading a session on The State of MariaDB. So if you want to go meet the creator of MySQL, the founder of MariaDB, or just taste some Salmiakki vodka, you certainly want to be there at Open Source Bridge.

At the recent O’Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo 2010, the nice folk at O’Reilly Media got to speak to Kurt von Finck, Chief Community and Communications Officer for Monty Program Ab, about how we handle releases, why we are a superset of MySQL and more. Watch the 7 minute video, and do give us some feedback here in the comments.
