ZRM Community Edition 3.0 (Beta) with Parallel Logical Backup Support for MySQL
+0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

We are pleased to announce the release of Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) Community Edition 3.0 (Beta). This release features support for parallel logical backups as an additional full backup method, which is made possible by integrating with the mydumper open source project.  This backup method represents a faster, scalable way to backup large databases.  The mysqldump (single threaded logical backup) support is still available for backing up stored procedures/routines.  ZRM Community Edition allows you to create multiple backup sets with different backup methods and policies; so, now you can do MySQL database backups with mydumper, as well as mysqldump in the same server.

We have also made many additional improvements and bug fixes since our earlier 2.2 release. We currently

We recently added support for Windows 7 to both Zmanda Cloud Backup and Amanda Enterprise. Zmanda Cloud Backup stores its backup archives on the Amazon S3 Storage Cloud. Amanda Enterprise has the option to do so. Users can backup both the Windows file systems and system state, as well as various Microsoft applications, Oracle and MySQL databases. Now we support all Windows versions supported by Microsoft, including Windows 7.

To upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, Microsoft recommends users to backup their Windows XP to external hard disk and then install Windows 7. Backup to (and Restore from) Cloud offers another

ZRM 2.1: Storage snapshots as backups
+0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

We released  ZRM for MySQL 2.1 Community Edition  today.  ZRM 2.1 includes the ability to treat snapshots as backup images. ZRM has supported backup of MySQL databases using storage snapshots using a plugin interface.  LVM (Logical Volume Manager) and Solaris ZFS snapshots are supported plugins in the ZRM Community Edition.
MySQL administrator can perform regular backups (backup images are stored in the ZRM server) or quick backups (snapshots acting as backup images). Quick backups have smaller backup windows and do not consume network bandwidth.  When MySQL database is stored on one or more ZFS filesystems, users can do multiple quick backups in a day (even once every hour) and convert one quick backup

I attended OpenSolaris Storage Summit last weekend.  There are lot of efforts going on to make OpenSolaris into a feature rich storage operating system.  Some of the projects that are relevant to backup are NDMP, Storage de-duplication, Virus scanning, Disk encryption and ZFS hybrid storage pools.

I talked about Amanda network backup and recovery and how well it fits with OpenSolaris and ZFS plans. Amanda can backup ZFS filesystems taking advantage of ZFS snapshots. ZFS snapshots provides the ability to backup open files in Open Solaris. Amanda 2.6.1alpha OpenSolaris packages that are available for download takes advantage of this feature.  Amanda can also take advantage of

ZRM for MySQL Cluster Edition, released during MySQL users conference last month, provides non-blocking backup and recovery for MySQL cluster databases. In addition to backup and recovery for MySQL clusters, the cluster edition also supports online backup and recovery of other MySQL storage engines such as MyISAM, InnoDB. Most applications using MySQL Clusters also store data in other storage engines. The Cluster edition provides a common user interface for backing and recovering applications that use multiple MySQL storage engines.

ZRM for MySQL supports both MySQL Cluster (http://www.mysql.com/products/database/cluster/) as well as the MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade (http://www.mysql.com/products/database/clustercge/) edition.

    Detecting malicious database activity
    +0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

I was talking to a customer yesterday and the customer was surprised that database backups can be used to detect malicious database activity from legitimate users and hackers.

ZRM for MySQL stores MySQL binary logs as part of the database backups. The binary logs provide a good audit trail of all database activity. ZRM for MySQL binary log parsing capability, usually used for selective point in time recovery, can also be used to detect malicious database activity using SQL inspection.

ZRM for MySQL plugin interface allows DBAs to write log parser plugin scripts to track the database activity that they are interested in. For example: the following script can be used to detect deletion of data from the PRODUCTS table in the database. This script

Retain your MySQL Binary Logs until needed - but no longer (using Zmanda Recovery Manager)
    +0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

ZRM for MySQL requires binary logging to be enabled on the MySQL server to do incremental backups. Enabling binary logs has minimal impact on MySQL performance. But, in an active database, the binary logs can grow to hundreds of gigabytes or even terabytes.

ZRM of MySQL has multiple plugin interfaces to customize the backup and recovery process to user environment. One of the plugin interfaces is the post backup plugin. The binary logs are no longer required after a backup. The post backup plugin can purge the binary logs after the backup. This will allow the system

What is the optimal backup method for MySQL databases?
    +0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

Goal of a MySQL system administrator is to have regular, consistent backups of the
databases with minimal impact on the database application. The backup process should
also limit the use of CPU, memory, network resources so that application is not impacted.
Optimal backup method must be choosen to keep the backup window as small as possible.
The backup parameters depends on various factors - number and size of databases, number
of MySQL servers, MySQL configuration, data security.

ZRM for MySQL provides consolidated backup and recovery for MySQL databases. ZRM
for MySQL provides extensive list of options to tune the backup process for the user
environment. It also tracks lots of backup parameters that are available to the administrator
    to tune the backup process.

ZRM for MySQL and MySQL Online Backup
    +0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

I had organized a session at MySQL camp on Saturday on the above topic. I should say I was one of the guilty ones who had slides for the session in an “unconference“.

Brian Aker (of MySQL) graciously stepped in to answer some questions and provided reasons for some of the design decisions in MySQL OnlineBackup. Some of them are:

    • Envelope format for backup archive. This would allow backup as well as recovery to continue in case the storage engines failed to do backup or recovery respectively.
    • Block size and envelope format will help in handling tape errors.
    • Logical backup will be done in case storage engine does not have online backup API implementation.

?We can do it, you can help?

This is how Marten Mickos (MySQL CEO) described the relationship between MySQL and the open source community at MySQL Camp. MySQL Camp held at Google over last weekend, was an useful opportunity to listen and talk to developers in the broad MySQL ecosystem (including Oracle VP) as well as MySQL users.

The most interesting talk was about the efforts made by MySQL folks to attract and reward MySQL community contributors. They have made significant efforts in this direction - MySQL forge, Planet MySQL, MySQL winter of code, MySQL community server and availability of MySQL work logs (roadmap)

We, at Zmanda, also understand the need to have vibrant open source community behind our work and

    MySQL Online Backup

    Digg this article

There are several methods to do live MySQL database backups. These methods are either storage engine specific (InnoDB hot backup, mysqlhotcopy), or require read locks (mysqldump), or require additional hardware (backup using replication, LVM snapshot). Some of these backup methods can do backups of remote MySQL servers also. So far, there is no backup method that provides storage engine agnostic, consistent full backups of local and remote servers. Goal of Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) of MySQL is to consolidate all these and future methods of MySQL backup and use the optimal method for the MySQL configuration.

One of the exciting developments in MySQL is the development of MySQL Online backup. The

Oops, I deleted my MySQL binary logs
    +0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

Yesterday, I was testing various backup and recovery methods supported by ZRM for MySQL before 1.1.1 release. ZRM for MySQL requires binary logging to be enabled on the MySQL server. I ran out of disk space during testing and removed the binary logs. Accidently, I deleted the last binary log used by MySQL server. MySQL server uses the most recent binary log.

I could not start MySQL server again.
