+2 Vote Up -0Vote Down

At OSCON, if you’re into the MySQL world, the day to be paying attention to BoFs is clearly Wednesday, 24 July 2013. We have a MariaDB BoF at D136 at 8pm-9pm, but before that you might be at the MySQL BoF in the same room, or you might be in Peter Zaitsev’s BoF on MySQL, NoSQL, Big Data – Better Together in E141. So figure out how to split yourself at 7-8pm, and once you’re done, come from 8-9pm at D136 on Wednesday and join the MariaDB crew at OSCON!

We’ll also be at the SkySQL booth, so come by Booth 815 and get some free t-shirts, stickers, or support the MariaDB community by being a foundation donor.

We’re at OSCON and today has been fabulous – I’ve just been connecting with old friends, and making new friends, and all this is what makes the travel experience completely worthwhile. If you’re at OSCON, why not come to a couple of BoF’s:

  • MariaDB: The Community Fork of MySQL at 8pm on Monday 19/07/2010. Great for a general overview of MariaDB, for beginners to the advanced folk to come to.
  • MariaDB: Features In-depth at 9pm on Wednesday 21/07/2010. Great if you’re a more intermediate to advanced user of MySQL/MariaDB and want to know more about the additional features MariaDB has to offer, and what else it might offer in the near

How to Submit a BoF Session for the MySQL Conference
    +2 Vote Up -0Vote Down

The Call for Proposals for the 2010 MySQL User Conference and Expo ended about 6 hours ago. However, birds-of-a-feather sessions (BoFs) have a separate call for proposals. From the MySQL Conference page at http://en.oreilly.com/mysql2010/, select the “Program” menu item, then “Birds of a feather sessions”, and you will be directed to the proper page. Which, for easy clicking, is http://en.oreilly.com/mysql2010/public/cfp/90.

The call for proposals for Birds of a feather sessions closes at 11:59 pm PST on Thursday, February 18th, 2010. Sessions can be added during the conference, but if you submit and your BoF is accepted it will be printed in the schedule.

Note: If you submitted a BoF proposal in the regular call for proposals, it’s much much easier if you submit the proposal again through the BoF call for proposals.

The MySQL Conference & Expo 2009 in Santa Clara is now in full swing and Karen Padir just gave the opening keynote, talking about Sun's continued and improved commitment to Open Source and the upcoming MySQL products like the MySQL 5.4 (http://mysql.com/5.4) performance release or MySQL Cluster 7.0 (http://www.mysql.com/products/database/cluster/). One of the activities that she mentioned in her keynote is our ongoing activity to improve the acceptance and incorporation of patches contributed by the community.

BoFs welcome at the MySQL Users Conference and Expo 2009

As usual, the MySQL Users Conference and Expo includes Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions.

For the uninitiated, a BoF is an informal discussion group about a common topic. There is no registration and no fee for a BoF. You can organize one even if you don't plan to attend the main event. If your BoF is accepted and scheduled, you can organize it as you like. You won't get a free pass for a BoF, though.

We provide the rooms. You bring in the ideas. Submit a BoF proposal!

Almost everything is suitable for a BoF. We only ask that it is related to

Drizzle? seeing sun through the clouds
    +0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

Brian Aker was at the Sun booth today, in a premier slot, where there must have been about 50-60 people, huddled around, to listen to him talk about Drizzle. The project motivations, what’s behind it, what its not aimed to be, and so much more. Check the video out (21 minutes long)!

The Birds of a Feather (BoF) session in the night, was well attended, and there was lots of large discussion on what’s next. I think the important message to take away is that Drizzle doesn’t aim to be MySQL, and there are no plans to “merge” things back (fixes where the code-base is shared though, might make sense). Its also important that the design is for the future,

BoF Tonight At Usenix Boston: Pros and Cons of Managed Services
    +0 Vote Up -0Vote Down

From 7:30 - 8:30 pm tonight, Wed. June 25th, in the Berkeley room of the Sheraton Boston, I will be hosting a Birds of a Feather conversation entitled “Pros and Cons of Managed Services”. This will go beyond MySQL and even beyond remote database management, and just deal with the overall pros and cons.

Come, share your good and bad experiences, and discuss why managed services may or may not be appropriate for your situation. I will try to take notes at the BoF.

(Note: I have no idea if they check badges for Birds of a Feather sessions or not)

MySQLConf Pythian “Birds of a Feather” Invitation

Hello everyone who is attending MySQLConf 2008!

I am finally able to announce when and where the Pythian BoF session has been scheduled! It will be in the Alameda room, 7:30-8:30pm on Tuesday, April 15th.

The session, titled “Ask the Pythian Maestro”, will be attended by myself and our two MySQL team leads, Sheeri K. Cabral and Augusto Bott.

This should be a fun session and hopefully people will show up. Attendees will get to:

    • Schmooze with Augusto, Sheeri, and I, ask us your technical questions and find out if we know what we’re talking about
    • Meet active Pythian customers - I have just been informed of the schedule and I am hopeful that several can attend
    • Find out what it’s like to work at Pythian if that’s what

… or, “Making Event Attendance Count”

Late last year, I gave a keynote at paired Finnish conferences MindTrek and OpenMind. While the events were well worth attending, afterwards I spent a few bleak hours thinking about the actual costs of my attendance. If I had left Canada just for these events (which, thankfully, I didn’t) then a naive estimation of costs would have been something like this:

    • ~20 000 km of air travel (Vancouver to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to Helsinki. Return.)
    • ~7 000+ CAD of costs (flights, hotels, taxis, meals, time) (borne by a combination of eZ Systems, the Mozilla Foundation and the conference
