Innodb transaction history often hides dangerous ‘debt’

In many write-intensive workloads Innodb/XtraDB storage engines you may see hidden and dangerous “debt” being accumulated – unpurged transaction “history” which if not kept in check over time will cause serve performance regression or will take all free space and cause an outage. Let’s talk about where it comes from and what can you do to avoid running into the trouble.

Technical Background: InnoDB is an MVCC engine which means it keeps multiple versions of the rows in the database, and when rows are deleted or updated they are not immediately removed from the database but kept for some time – until they can be removed. For a majority of OLTP workloads they can be removed seconds after the change actually took place. In some cases though they might need to be kept for a long period of time

Galera data on Percona Cloud Tools (and other MySQL monitoring tools)

I was talking with a Percona Support customer earlier this week who was looking for Galera data on Percona Cloud Tools. (Percona Cloud Tools, now in free beta, is a hosted service providing access to query performance insights for all MySQL uses.)

The customer mentioned they were already keeping track of some Galera stats on Cacti, and given they were inclined to use Percona Cloud Tools more and more, they wanted to know if it was already supporting Percona XtraDB Cluster. My answer was: “No, not yet: you can install

I just returned from a week in Cambridge, Massachusetts where I was attending the OpenStack Trove Day and the Trove mid-cycle meetup, both sponsored by the great folks at Tesora.

Reference architecture for a write-intensive MySQL deployment

We designed Percona Cloud Tools (both hardware and software setup) to handle a very high-intensive MySQL write workload. For example, we already observe inserts of 1bln+ datapoints per day. So I wanted to share what kind of hardware we use to achieve this result.

Let me describe what we use, and later I will explain why.

Server:

  • Chassis: Supermicro SC825TQ-R740LPB 2U Rackmount Chassis
  • Motherboard: Supermicro X9DRI-F dual socket

TokuDB gotchas: slow INFORMATION_SCHEMA TABLES

We are using Percona Server + TokuDB engine extensively in Percona Cloud Tools and getting real usage operational experience with this engine. So I want to share some findings we came across, in hope it may help someone in their work with TokuDB.

So, one problem I faced is that SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES is quite slow when I have thousands tables in TokuDB. How slow? For example…

select * from information_schema.tables limit 1000;
...
1000 rows in set (18 min 31.93 sec)

This is very similar to what InnoDB faced a couple years back. InnoDB solved it by adding
