Known Issue Announcement for Tungsten Products and MySQL 8

On Monday April 27th, MySQL released a much-anticipated patch release 8.0.20. Along with many bug fixes and improvements, a new property was introduced – binlog-transaction-compression. During our own internal testing we have discovered an incompatibility with our Continuent Tungsten products when this property is enabled.

The newly-released binlog-transaction-compression feature is really interesting because it compresses transaction payloads before being written into the binary logs, which in turn reduces the disk space overhead required for storage. I’m sure many users will be keen to implement this, however at this time the use of binlog-transaction-compression=ON will prevent Replication from functioning correctly.

Over the past few days we have been working with a number of customers on the best way to handle Triggers within their MySQL environment when combined with Tungsten Replicator. We looked at situations where Tungsten Replicator was either part of a Tungsten Clustering installation or a standalone replication pipeline.

Comparing MySQL to Vertica Replication under MemCloud, AWS and Bare Metal

Back in December, I did a detailed analysis for getting data into Vertica from MySQL using Tungsten Replicator, all within the Kodiak MemCloud.

I got some good numbers towards the end – 1.9 million rows/minute into Vertica. I did this using a standard replicator deployment, plus some tweaks to the Vertica environment. In particular:

  • Integer hash for a partition for both the staging and base tables
  • Some tweaks to the queries to ensure that we used the partitions in the most efficient manner
  • Optimized the batching within the applier to hit the right numbers for the transaction counts

That last one is a bit of a cheat because in a real-world situation it’s much harder to be able to identify those transaction sizes and row counts, but for testing, we’re trying to get the best performance!

Tungsten Clustering 5.3.1 and Tungsten Replicator 5.3.1 are now available!

Continuent are pleased to announce that the new 5.3.1 release is now available for all our customers.

This is a key bug fix and feature release, the key component of which is the final piece of the support for extracting data types from MySQL 5.7 with the Geometry data type.

Key improvements within Tungsten Clustering:

  • Full Support for MySQL data types with the addition of Geometry datatype
  • Fixed an issue where large memory dumps could be collected during a failure
  • Fixed some issues to ensure compatibility with upcoming products

Tungsten Clustering 6.0 and Tungsten Replicator 6.0 are now available!

Continuent is very pleased and excited to announce that the new Tungsten Clustering 6.0 and Tungsten Replicator 6.0 are now available for download by our customers. The 6.0 release is the culmination of over a years work within our clustering product in order to improve the functionality and manageability of what we now call our ‘Multimaster Clustering’ solution. This is the replacement for what we called the multi-site, multi-master (MSMM) clustering functionality in earlier releases. The multimaster clustering allows for multiple clusters, in multiple locations, to be linked together into a single composite cluster. Because it’s a composite cluster, you gain all of the functionality that’s already available in a cluster, such as:

  • High availability
  • Failover
  • Automated recovery
  • Read-write split
  • Maintenance without downtime

Analytical Replication Performance from MySQL to Vertica on MemCloud

I’ve recently been trying to improve the performance of the Vertica replicator, particularly in the form of the of the new single schema replication. We’ve done a lot in the new Tungsten Replicator 5.3.0 release to improve (and ultimately support) the new single schema model.

As part of that, I’ve also been personally looking to Kodiak MemCloud as a deployment platform. The people at Kodiak have been really helpful (disclaimer: I’ve worked with some of them in the past). MemCloud is a high-performance cloud platform that is based on hardware with high speed (and volume) RAM, SSD and fast Ethernet connections. This means that even without any adjustment and tuning you’ve got a fast platform to work on.
