Setting up LVM on Suse Linux

You can do all sorts of magic with LVM, like backing up MySQL using file system snapshots, but in order to do so you need to set it first. When installing a new computer with Suse Linux I found that this was harder than expected, unless you know what to do. Needless to say, I didn't, but some friends gave me a hand on IRC, and now I do. :-)

So I wrote a little article about this which you can find here, in an effort to save others some time. The article is about setting up LVM with Suse Yast, but you can probably use it for other flavors of Linux, too.

How I stopped worrying and learned to love Twitter

I was warned by my brother a while ago that should I start tweeting, he would stage an intervention. I had already confessed to accounts with facebook, multiply, myspace, and several others (disclaimer/explanation: all of those sites are customers of my longtime employer). Twitter, to the uninitiated, looks like the crack cocaine of social networking that turns the weekend photo-poster into a hardcore jittering lifecaster. Nobody wants to see their family member come to that, right? But follow along, twitter has purpose. Or just skip to the bottom.

I was never an active friendster user. The first site I used …

New role for me too...

Some weeks ago I've resigned from Sun Microsystems, where I worked as a MySQL Telecom Sales Engineer. Beginning July 13th I will take on a new role in the MySQL ecosystem, as "Project Manager and COO" for Monty Program Ab.

Since it can be argued I'm moving to a competitor, and I was working in a customer facing role, upon resigning I had to immediately return my computer, phone, etc to Sun, and my login accounts, including email, were terminated. I've gotten some comments about this (like: "Is there no trust in the world anymore?" and "How can you treat anyone like that?") and I cannot stress this enough: This is normal, I expected it, indeed brought it to my managers attention myself. If nothing else, think of it this way: This precaution also protects me from any misunderstandings and/or false accusations. Besides, starting your vacation by returning your laptop and removing your email account isn't the worst thing to happen to you - try …

MySQL University: Starring Sakila - A Data Warehouse Mini-Tutorial

This Thursday (July 2nd, 13:00 UTC), Roland Bouman will will take the Sakila sample database and explain how to design and load a data warehouse for it, and how to use that to create those reports and charts that make managers smile. Leaving Sun/MySQL but not the community

I thought I would put out a quick note about this right now, I am going to be leaving Sun next week. I do have some plans which will start to materialize over the next few weeks and months so stick around for that. Even though I am leaving the company, I will still be lurking and working on all think database and performance related. This should not have any bearing on BigDBAHead.com or Waffle Grid, hopefully this will only mean I will post more and spend more time doing crazy and cool things!

I wanted to thank everyone at MySQL who I worked with and learned from over the past few years.
