"Telephony is just yet another Internet application." MySQL talks with Juha Heinänen.

During 2008 we are planning to run a series of interviews with interesting persons somehow related to the telecom field. In this first installment, we will have a chat with Juha Heinänen from Finland.

MySQL: Juha, you are a former professor of Computer Science and Communication technology, CTO (or similar positions) in at least Sonera, Telia and Song, former ATM specialist, responsible for bringing Internet to Finland and registering the .fi top-level domain, a consultant for many early network equipment startups some of which succeeded to be still with us today, and author of several RFC's. Nowadays you are a core contributor to the OpenSER SIP proxy, and you sell a VoIP platform called OpenSIPg based on that to Nordic operators. In addition you seem to live a life that would likely be a dream of many hackers, spending time in different parts of the world hacking on your favorite Open Source project. Even to this date, I …

Interview on Impackt '08

I recently was interviewed by Packt Publishing for their Impackt '08 web pages:

Ever since the formal adoption of the term in 1998, Open Source has experienced growth and adoption rates that defy pressures and suggestions that it’s a viable option for enthusiasts and geeks only. Governments, corporations as well as small businesses have begun to choose Open Source over proprietary software. However, with the global economy facing an uncertain future, how will open source be impacted? Can it continue to grow despite this?

With these questions in mind and more, Packt approached some people at the heart of this movement to understand their take on the future of open source.

The …

Enjoy!

Community Team interview with Mårten Mickos about the Sun Acquisition

We have just published an interview with our CEO Mårten Mickos on our Developer Zone, where he answers a number of questions from the Community Team about Sun's plans to acquire MySQL AB and what this means for the MySQL User Community and the direction of the product (thanks to Colin for compiling and editing the text). I hope that the comments help to calm the concerns of some people about the future of MySQL with regards to Open Source, support of platforms or language bindings:

CT: Is MySQL fully committed to free and open source software, and the GPL?
Mårten: Yes.
CT: What does the Sun acquisition mean for Linux support? What about Windows, Mac OS/X and other platforms?
Mårten: One of the reasons …

I`m still being remembered by one of my famous quotes back then rougly translated to "those toddlers steal my bandwith" , when being asked about how the growing userbase of the KULeuven PC rooms in the Dekenstraat influenced my network usage :) (Think 1994 ish :))

But the acutal news is that Profoss is coming closer and closer .. and you should now Register!
So all you Drupal and MySQL folks out there.. this is your chance to learn about virtualization !

OSCON Interviews: Solid

It's already a month old, but I just stumbled over this ITtoolbox Interview with Jonathan Cheyer (Open Source Community Manager) and Murat Demiroglu (Senior Product Manager) from Solid Information Technology, in which Dru Lavigne talks with them about Solid (the company) and the solidDB for MySQL storage engine, which is currently in beta testing. I still remember Solid from my times at SUSE Linux, where it used to be a part of the Linux distribution along with MySQL, PostgreSQL, Adabas D and several other DBs...
